Women's World Cup 2023: Vietnam Women's Team 0-2 Portugal Women's Team
After 90 minutes in Waikato, the Vietnamese women's team lost 0-2 to Portugal thanks to goals from Telma Raquel Velosa Encarnacao and Francisca Nazareth.
Facing Portugal in the second round of Group E of the 2023 World Cup at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton (New Zealand), the Vietnamese women's team played well right after the opening whistle.
However, after failing to finish successfully, coach Mai Duc Chung's team was pressured by the opponent.
After just over 20 minutes of play, Portugal took a 2-0 lead, after goals from Encarnacao and Nazareth.
In the second half, Portugal continued to press the field but they could not convert their chances into goals. The Vietnamese team defended firmly and the score of 0-2 was maintained until the end of 90 minutes.
With this defeat, coach Mai Duc Chung's team was officially eliminated, but there is still a match ahead with the Dutch women's team in the final round of the group stage.
Meanwhile, with the victory over the Vietnamese women's team, the Portuguese women's team achieved a historic victory in their first participation in the biggest football festival on the planet.
This result also helps them have 3 points to continue aiming for a new miracle, which is to "defeat" the current runner-up USA in the final round to enter the round of 16.
Previously, the US and the Netherlands drew 1-1 in the highlight match of Group E, thereby continuing to hold the top two positions in Group E with 4 points each. The two teams only need to draw in the final round to qualify for the next round.
According to the schedule, the two matches in the final round of Group E of the 2023 Women's World Cup will take place at 2:00 p.m. on August 1 (Vietnam time).
Coach Mai Duc Chung shared after the match
Evaluating the match against Portugal, coach Mai Duc Chung shared: "At the beginning of the match, my players were too excited, pushing the team forward to attack and revealing gaps in defense. That gave Portugal a lot of space to attack and score.
The players did not execute the tactics correctly and were somewhat subjective, so they fell into Portugal's trap. The team has a good technical and physical foundation, they play fast and sharp, so it is not difficult to understand why they scored two goals."
