Bustling lantern street
Since the beginning of August, the festive atmosphere has enveloped the lantern streets with long rows of lanterns of all kinds, sizes, and designs, from traditional to modern. Some places that many young people "check-in" include the lantern street at Van Hanh Mall in District 10, Crescent Mall in District 7, Ba Tu Market on Binh Phu Street - District 6, or the lantern cafe in Ward 12, Tan Binh District... However, the most famous is still the lantern street on Luong Nhu Hoc Street in District 5.
Here, shops sell all kinds of lanterns in many different designs, from traditional star and carp shapes to modern models that light up with LED lights. Children, their parents and relatives laugh and talk happily, joining the crowd pouring into the lantern street to enjoy and shop for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
Ms. Nguyen Ho Mai Trang, living in Thu Duc City, expressed: “This is the first time I have come here and I am quite surprised because there is still a month until Mid-Autumn Festival but it is very bustling, crowded, and has many new lanterns. For example, there are newly emerging characters like Labubu here, but there are already lanterns in this shape, so I feel quite interesting”.
Also visiting the lantern street for the first time, Ms. Ngo Hong Le, living in District 12, felt very excited and was quickly attracted by the diversity and creativity of the lantern models: "When I arrived here, I was a bit surprised because it was very crowded and bustling. People visit these neighborhoods, here there are many lantern models displayed from traditional to modern".
The flow of people coming to visit, shop and take photos created a bustling, brilliant scene with colorful flashing lanterns. The joy was evident on the faces of the children as they held their favorite lanterns, frolicking and having fun with their families, adding to the excitement and eagerness to welcome the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
Find the old features
This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival lanterns not only retain their traditional values but are also constantly being innovated to suit modern trends. In addition to the star-shaped and carp-shaped lanterns that are widely sold, new, modern lantern models have appeared in Ho Chi Minh City, such as the Labubu lantern – a famous cartoon character that has won the hearts of many young people.
These lanterns not only have eye-catching shapes but are also equipped with glowing LED lights and can even make sounds, making choosing a lantern a more enjoyable experience than ever.
According to Mr. Kha Vinh Tuong, a lantern seller in District 5, many children now like Labubu lanterns with lights attached. Middle-aged people tend to prefer traditional lanterns, while children prefer battery-operated or wooden ones.
With nearly 20 years of experience selling lanterns, Mr. Tran Vinh Nhu commented that Lantern Street is gradually regaining its old features with many traditional designs becoming popular. "Currently, people are tending to return to traditional lanterns. They like things from the past more than modern ones now, the most popular are star lanterns and cellophane lanterns. Last year, rabbit-shaped lanterns were very popular, but this year they prefer Labubu lanterns," Mr. Nhu shared.
The colorful lantern streets are not only a place for shopping, but also a cultural meeting place for city residents and tourists during each Mid-Autumn Festival. The combination of many types of traditional and modern lanterns, along with the bustling festival space, is enriching the cultural picture of Ho Chi Minh City.
