On October 16, Khanh Hoa province coordinated with the Small Projects Funding Program in Vietnam (Global Environment Facility) to organize a consultation workshop on Nha Trang Bay Functional Zoning, linking sustainable livelihood development for Bich Dam.
Here, the speakers focused on discussing related contents to complete the draft "Functional zoning of Nha Trang Bay". In which, emphasizing the Hon Mun - Bich Dam island area in the general zoning plan of the entire bay, towards sustainable development of coral reefs and improving the livelihoods of the community on Bich Dam island.
Attending the workshop, Bich Dam residents expressed their agreement with the project to support livelihoods for the island community. At the same time, they hoped that the local government would pay attention to building and investing in developing a community ecotourism model to attract visitors, create jobs and increase income for the people.
Bich Dam Island, located in the Hon Tre island cluster and is one of the farthest islands of Nha Trang City. With its unique terrain, it takes more than 1 hour and 30 minutes by boat from the mainland to the island. The island area currently has 228 households, with nearly 900 people living, the people here have attached their lives to the sea by fishing and aquaculture.
Bich Dam has beautiful scenery, clean environment, good security, wide sandy beach for overnight camping, has the ability to restore handicrafts and souvenir products from shells, snails, shrimp, etc. At the same time, there are also attractions such as Bich Dam Communal House, Bich Son Pagoda and Hon Lon Lighthouse - one of the 5 oldest lighthouses in Vietnam, the roof of the island.
Mr. Phan Dinh Phung - Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Province Department of Tourism, commented that Bich Dam island area has potential and meets all the conditions to form and develop a community ecotourism model. The leaders of Khanh Hoa Province's Department of Tourism requested the Nha Trang City People's Committee to pay attention to completing the procedures to send to Khanh Hoa Province's Department of Transport to be granted a wharf license on Bich Dam Island according to regulations. At the same time, Mr. Phung said that the People's Committee of Nha Trang City needs to soon approve the Project on community tourism model in the city in general and Bich Dam island area in particular to serve as a basis for implementation and support for the community tourism model in Bich Dam island area to meet the prescribed criteria. Building a long-term action plan and program for sustainable tourism development, preserving the landscape and environment, organizing a force to support guests, to develop the local economy, respecting indigenous values, and community values is in line with the sustainable orientation.
Nha Trang also needs to mobilize resources to support initial capital for households, families, and community members, thereby replicating the model, developing food and accommodation services for guests. Discussing solutions for tourism development in Bich Dam, delegates at the workshop also pointed out the advantages, shortcomings, and obstacles and suggested that tourism development must be associated with the protection of natural landscapes, island borders, and security and order on the island. Mr. Nguyen Van Minh - Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee, said that the locality is aiming to develop a "green and sustainable" community tourism model in Bich Dam, where local people are the main subjects, directly benefiting from tourism activities, while protecting and promoting the natural and cultural values of the island. The city is developing a project "Developing community tourism in Bich Dam Island, Vinh Nguyen Ward", continuing to receive comments from individuals, units, ... and ministries, departments, branches, and functional agencies to complete the model./.
