Archaeological site recently discovered in Crete, Greece

CNN on June 14 quoted information from the Greek Ministry of Culture as saying that the mysterious relic is a unique and extremely interesting stone structure belonging to the Minoan civilization. This is a civilization famous for its lavish palaces, brilliant art and mysterious writing system.

Looking quite similar to a giant wheel from above, the remains of the maze-like structure cover an area of about 1,800 m 2 .

The ruins were found at the top of a hill that is planned to house a radar station for a new airport near the town of Kastelli on the island of Crete, a popular tourist destination.

Scheduled to open in 2027, the airport is expected to replace Greece's second-largest international airport in Heraklion, and is designed to handle 18 million passengers a year.

To this day, archaeologists do not know what the structure on top of the hill was. The ruins are still being excavated and no comparable structure has been found among the long-known remains of the Minoan civilization.

Experts hypothesize that this place may have been used for religious or ceremonial rituals in ancient times.

The ruins are surrounded by eight stepped stone walls up to 1.7 m high. The internal structure is divided into smaller, interconnected spaces and likely once had a pyramidal roof.

The Greek Ministry of Culture said there was no evidence to suggest that the site had ever been inhabited. Inside the structure were large amounts of animal bones, possibly used for ritual purposes.
