Established in May 2001 by decision of the Navy Commander, the 37/2 mm PPK battalion under the Naval Region 5 Command has the mission of countering air attacks, protecting the An Thoi Base Command and assigned targets.

The force consists of two companies, 83 and 84, of 37/2 mm anti-aircraft guns and other modern weapons and equipment.

Due to the nature of the dispersed military presence on the island, the difficult security work, the harsh climate conditions, while the training and combat readiness tasks required increasing levels of commitment, this had a significant impact on the soldiers' ideology and psychology.

Faced with that reality, the unit determined that the top priority was to focus on doing well political and ideological work, building determination for officers and soldiers as the basis and foundation to overcome difficulties and improve the quality of training work.

In order to raise awareness of combat readiness for soldiers, the unit focuses on implementing well 10 combat readiness regimes according to the regulations of the Army; ensuring combat duty, guarding the sky 24/24 hours, closely monitoring networks to avoid missing, leaking, being surprised, missing opportunities, reporting false information, and managing well the assigned airspace.

In addition, the unit also closely coordinates with stations, stations and forces in the area to build a solid air defense posture; in which, focusing on arranging stations and radar stations alternately, deploying the battlefield system in favorable terrain, ensuring the elements of secrecy and surprise.

The work of studying and understanding the enemy is tightly organized from many sources and directions; the reconnaissance, surveillance, and visual observation systems are arranged in a continuous manner, ensuring coordination in information collection, detecting the enemy from afar, and firmly grasping the enemy in the air and at sea to improve the ability to manage airspace at many different ranges and directions...

Major Trinh Quang Trung, Political Commissar of PPK Battalion 553, said: "During the Tet holiday of Ky Hoi 2019, in parallel with the task of being ready to fight during Tet, the unit also carefully prepares for soldiers to celebrate Tet such as organizing sports , cultural, artistic activities, traditional storytelling competitions; banh chung wrapping competitions, displaying five-fruit trays... Through these activities, it will help soldiers unite and bond with each other, forgetting the feeling of being away from home during Tet holidays".
