OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has recently considered developing a chatbot-integrated web browser or entering into partnership agreements to enhance search capabilities.
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence leader led by Sam Altman, is making bold moves to expand its influence in search and web browsing.
According to a report from The Information, OpenAI has discussed developing search products with several major partners including Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline. Some sources said they have access to prototypes or designs of new products from OpenAI.
The move not only marks a major step forward for OpenAI, but also puts the company in direct competition with Google, the giant that dominates the majority of the browser and search markets. OpenAI has entered the search market with its SearchGPT product, bringing a new dimension to the way users access information.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has been ramping up its AI efforts since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Last year, Google introduced the AI chatbot Gemini in response to ChatGPT’s popularity. However, Google’s dominance in the browser market is facing challenges, especially after the US Department of Justice suggested the company sell its Chrome browser to end its monopoly on online search.
Alphabet shares fell about 1% in extended trading after falling 5% in the previous session, reflecting investor concerns. In addition to its search products, OpenAI is also expanding its collaboration with several major partners. The company has discussed providing AI power for devices made by Samsung, a key Google partner. At the same time, OpenAI has established a relationship with Apple, providing technology to support the “Apple Intelligence” feature on new generation iPhone devices.
However, OpenAI is reportedly not ready to launch its own web browser just yet, which could be a long-term step in the company’s expansion strategy. Google, OpenAI, and Samsung have not commented on the reports. However, it is clear that OpenAI is making a significant shift in the technology sector, signaling more fierce competition in the future.
