If elected president, Mr. Trump said he would consider inviting billionaire Elon Musk to join the cabinet because this billionaire is smart, but would still end tax incentives for electric vehicles.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on August 19 that if elected, he would consider ending the $7,500 tax deduction for electric vehicle purchases. He also raised the possibility of bringing Tesla CEO Elon Musk into his cabinet or giving him an advisory role. "Tax deductions and tax incentives are generally not a good thing," Trump told Reuters after a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. When asked if he would consider appointing billionaire Musk to an advisory role or a cabinet job, the former US president said he would consider it: "He (Elon Musk) is a very smart guy. I would certainly consider it, if he agreed." According to Reuters, billionaire Musk publicly supported Republican candidate Trump in the race for the White House in July. However, Tesla has not responded to Trump's latest comments. Last week, Trump interviewed tech mogul Musk on social media X. The two have been vocal about their attacks on Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Trump has previously said he changed his mind about electric vehicles after Musk endorsed him. “I’m for electric vehicles. I have to be, because Elon Musk has supported me so strongly. I have no choice,” Trump said at a rally in early August. If elected, Trump could take steps to reverse Treasury Department rules that make it easier for electric carmakers to take advantage of the $7,500 tax credit, or ask Congress to repeal it entirely.
