"It is my honor to announce John Phelan as our next Secretary of the Navy. John will be a steadfast leader in advancing our America First vision. He will put the Navy first," President-elect Donald Trump announced on November 26.
The position of US Navy Secretary still needs Senate confirmation.
John Phelan is the founder and president of Rugger Management LLC, a private investment firm based in Florida. He is a managing partner of the private equity firm MSD Capital. He has a degree in political studies and a minor in business administration. However, he has never served in the military.
"His extensive knowledge and experience will help improve the lives of American service members. John will deliver real results for the Navy and for America. I look forward to working with him," Trump's statement added.
According to Federal Election Commission data, Mr. Phelan has donated more than $834,000 to Mr. Trump's campaign.
After winning the election on November 5, US President-elect Donald Trump is gradually completing his administration before taking office early next year. His nominees are mostly young people, including billionaires or candidates working in the media.
