(Dan Tri) - According to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President-elect Donald Trump's repeated mention of the idea of annexing Canada is a tactic to divert attention from the impact of his proposed tax policy.

"I think what's happening is that President-elect Donald Trump, who is a very skillful negotiator, is distracting people a little bit with the topic of tariffs. Oil and gas, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, concrete, everything that American consumers buy from Canada will suddenly become much more expensive if he imposes these tariffs," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
Trump had previously threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports unless Ottawa strengthened its border security. On January 7, he said he would not rule out the use of economic pressure to annex Canada to the United States.
Mr. Trudeau said that Canada will never become part of the United States, and emphasized that Ottawa will respond if Mr. Trump carries out this threat.
The Canadian prime minister recalled a bilateral trade dispute in 2018, when Canada imposed tariffs on Heinz ketchup, playing cards, wine and Harley Davidson motorcycles, all of which were products that affected American workers when they were taxed.
But, he added: "We don't want to do that anymore because it also increases costs for Canadians and hurts our closest trading partner."
Recently, despite the controversy, Mr. Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of annexing Canada, buying Greenland and regaining control of the Panama Canal. He said he did not rule out using military force to achieve his goals in Greenland and the Panama Canal, but economic pressure on Canada.
Responding to Mr. Trump's tariff warning, Prime Minister Trudeau said such a move would have negative impacts on both countries.
In another related development, the Global and Mail newspaper reported on January 9 that Canada is considering imposing retaliatory tariffs on many US products, including steel, orange juice, and plastic products, to deal with the upcoming US administration's tax policy.
