The Chinese president said the current trend is "toward a truly multipolar world" and called for promoting the Belt and Road Initiative.

"We are experiencing changes unprecedented in a century, the historical trend toward a multipolar world and economic globalization is irresistible," Chinese President Xi Jinping said via video at the opening ceremony of the second Eurasian Economic Forum in Moscow on May 24 as a guest.

With the theme of this year's forum being "Asia-Europe Integration in a Multipolar World", Mr. Tap said that the international community is unanimous in upholding true multilateralism and promoting development cooperation between regions.

He praised the Belt and Road Initiative's aim as "exploring new ways for countries to achieve common development and opening up a path of happiness that benefits the whole world".

Xi said China hopes that coordination between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union will deepen and "all countries will work together to unite and contribute to opening up new prospects for Asia-Europe cooperation."

The Eurasian Economic Forum is organized by the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which was founded in 2014 with four other members: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. All five members have signed up to the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s ambitious economic and infrastructure development project.

Xi's comments came after Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin visited Beijing, where the two sides signed a series of new agreements on trade and agriculture. Mishustin said he expected bilateral trade between Russia and China to reach $200 billion by 2023, hailing relations at an "unprecedented level."

Last week, Xi also hosted the leaders of two EAEU member states, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, along with other former Soviet states such as Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan at the China-Central Asia Summit.

At the two-day conference, Xi pledged 26 billion yuan (nearly $4 billion) in aid to Central Asian countries and called for stronger energy and security ties with the region.

China is scheduled to host the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation this year.
