Former student of Nguyen Truong To High School (Duc Co District) Le Thi Huyen is currently a student of Foreign Economics at Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Trade University. In the first round of the 2021 high school graduation exam, Huyen excelled and became the valedictorian of block D in the province with a total score of 28.25 (Math 9.4 points, Literature 9.25 points, English 9.6 points).

Sharing her experience when practicing and taking the exam, Huyen said: Math requires high accuracy. Therefore, first, you should focus on doing easy questions that are within your ability. After completing, you need to carefully check and recalculate before moving on to more difficult or advanced questions to make sure you don't miss out on points.

For Literature, you need to divide the time specifically for each section of reading comprehension, social commentary, and literary commentary to ensure enough time to complete the test. You should learn the main ideas, arguments, evidence, and write a complete essay using your own writing skills; this helps the essay have its own identity, not following a template. In particular, you also need to practice argumentation skills right in your thinking combined with writing speed to avoid hand fatigue and be able to complete the test faster.

Nguyen Vu Nhat Huy - the valedictorian of the 2022 provincial high school graduation exam - said that candidates should review systematically, linking groups of knowledge together to be able to remember easily. Photo: NVCC

“For English, candidates should systematize their grammar knowledge and review vocabulary by topic. The reading comprehension part may depend on each person’s vocabulary, but it is necessary to make sure they get the grammar sentences right. At this time, you can review the knowledge from the practice tests and find out any mistakes or gaps in knowledge to promptly fill in before entering the exam,” Huyen shared.

Similarly, Nguyen Vu Nhat Huy - a first-year student majoring in English Pedagogy (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) also had impressive scores in the 2022 high school graduation exam. Specifically: Literature 9.5, Math 9, History 9.25, Geography 9.25, Civic Education 9, Social Science combination 9.17 and English 9.4 points. With this result, Huy is not only the valedictorian of the province but also the valedictorian of groups C and D of Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted.

Talking about the secret to reviewing the Social Science subjects, Huy happily said: Instead of practicing the questions and reviewing the knowledge as you go, you should review systematically, linking groups of knowledge together. For example, for History, you can memorize in chronological order and pay attention to the cause-effect relationship; at the same time, link events together so you don't forget. In Geography, the knowledge system is based on each region across the country; each region follows a certain order (natural then economic) and compares these regions to find commonalities and differences.

“A small tip that I have applied quite effectively is to divide the number of knowledge points in each section equally, so that when studying, it is easy to know whether I have remembered enough or not,” Huy revealed.

The top scorer of the province's B group in the 2022 high school graduation exam, Nguyen Gia Thanh - a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy (former student of Quang Trung High School, An Khe town) also "revealed" a useful review method to help 12th grade students be more confident in Math and Natural Science subjects. Thanh said that he once got 9 points in Math, 9.5 points in Chemistry and Biology each. To achieve this result, he not only prepared well for his knowledge and skills but also trained himself to have a strong mentality when entering the exam room.

Understanding the stress and pressure of 12th grade students before the "passing the gate" exam, with his experience, Thanh believes that students should not review too much or put too much effort into it, causing confusion and affecting their health. Instead, you should focus on both consolidating knowledge and reviewing questions with a focus; combine a nutritious diet, exercise, relax your mind and get enough sleep, avoid staying up late... When reviewing, you can change your study space, study in groups or discuss with teachers about things you do not understand to make your review more effective.

“Each subject is an important factor that makes up the exam score. Therefore, in my opinion, having a clear plan to review all subjects is very necessary. For the Natural Science group, in addition to mastering the theory, you should also look at many quick solving tips and tips for using the Casio calculator because it will help a lot in the process of doing the test”-Thanh suggested.
