The book was launched with the aim of helping readers gain a deeper insight into the contributions of women during the war, especially reminding us to cherish the values of independence and peace that we have at present.
Sharing about the first time I heard about "Ho Chi Minh Trail" and my feelings at that time, Ms. Sherry Buchanan (author of the book) said: "The first time I heard about the Vietnam War, it was in the 70s of the 20th century when I had just moved to the US to study. I watched on TV, the mass media talked about the US dropping B52 bombs on Vietnam causing heavy damage to people and property. In particular, at that time I could not directly contact to learn about the Vietnam War until I heard more specific information such as bombing in the capital Hanoi, or the injuries that the people were suffering...
Perhaps, that was also the deep motivation that made me have to study the book more thoroughly, which means to bring the seemingly distant concepts to life. My way of doing it was to talk to the women who directly protected their homeland, as well as the Ho Chi Minh trail."
“I believe so much in the power of storytelling through dialogue, the healing that comes from different perspectives across history, and that’s more important now than ever,” added author Sherry Buchanan.
Talking about her feelings when visiting Hanoi and visiting the first command post of the group in 1959, Ms. Sherry Buchanan said: "The first time I started to learn about the Truong Son road, in my imagination at that time this was a very complicated campaign. But I was very surprised because its beginning was the number of weapons, or the very humble beginning, but gradually it became bigger and bigger over time".
Expressing his feelings when reading the book "Ho Chi Minh Trail", speaker Nguyen Van Sau said: "I am particularly impressed by this book, because it is a book by an American female author - who is currently living in England. I think that from such cultural areas, writing about Truong Son, writing about Ho Chi Minh trail, the author chose the name "Ho Chi Minh Trail", I find it really impressive.
I have read it, looked at it like "Riding a horse to see flowers", I find this book very impressive, especially the way of presenting the structure in the form of a route from North to South that the reader does not need to read the whole book, just need to read the introduction, can read the last paragraph... related documents, can read each chapter and paragraph. So this is a very concise book, and has a very rich perspective of an American woman currently living in England writing about the war years caused by the American Empire causing crimes in Vietnam".
In this book, the author mentions and exploits a lot about the female youth volunteers and women on the Ho Chi Minh trail, a very impressive exploitation. In particular, the 5 Ho Chi Minh trails in the resistance war against the US to save the country of Vietnam, according to the author's feelings, these are legendary trails, trails that demonstrate the strength, will, belief and desire for independence of Vietnam. And we have made a miracle of exploiting each trail that many books and newspapers talk about but still cannot fully express its legendary and magnificent nature.
"I think this is one of the books that focuses on women, the role of women participating in the Ho Chi Minh campaign on the Truong Son Range, and especially the way it is presented with a new perspective, not much influenced by war. In particular, I was impressed when the author had a journey on the Ho Chi Minh trail from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and to Laos," said speaker Nguyen Van Sau.
According to speaker Nguyen Van Sau, events like today will contribute to making the Vietnam - US relationship better and open a new page. In particular, the books of author Sherry Buchanan will contribute to making the relationship between Vietnam - US even better, closing the past so we can look to the future. Just like the Truong Son Range was fierce in the past, now the Truong Son Range has become green again, beautiful again and legendary compared to the war years.
"We do not want war to create the legendary Truong Son trails, but we ourselves should eliminate negative factors. Thanks to war, the dignity of the Vietnamese people, Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese strength, love for peace and love for the nation, so that we can create those legends, have the basis and conditions to develop and multiply the miracles of the Vietnamese people," speaker Nguyen Van Sau added.
