Khe Tien village in Dong Van commune is the first place in Binh Lieu district as well as the whole Quang Ninh province to implement a cold-water fish farming model, including Siberian sturgeon.
In 2015, the Northeast Agricultural and Fisheries Development Cooperative released 300 Siberian sturgeon fry into the cold waters of Khe Tien.
Mr. Doan Dinh Kha, Director of the Cooperative, said: Khe Tien is located at a high altitude, has many forests, which is a factor to keep the water source and water temperature low.
Along with that, Khe Tien terrain is steep, divided, and has valleys, which creates strong currents carrying large amounts of oxygen, as well as forming still water areas.
Above all, Khe Tien is very clean, the natural environment is still pristine, seemingly little affected by human hands. Therefore, I think that if we implement a sturgeon farming model here, first of all, there will be benefits in terms of water resources and climate, these are important factors to ensure successful fish farming.
People in Khe Tien village, Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district (Quang Ninh province) develop a model of raising cold-water Siberian sturgeon.
Relatively true to prediction, the first batch of sturgeon of the Northeast Agricultural and Fisheries Development Cooperative adapted to the Khe Tien water flow, the growth rate was a bit slow, but the quality of the fish after harvest was highly appreciated.
Based on the initial success, in the later farming process, the Northeast Agricultural and Fisheries Development Cooperative made fundamental adjustments to the water supply and drainage infrastructure system, pond and tank infrastructure system, farming process... to promote the adaptation and development process of sturgeon.
Currently, the Khe Tien sturgeon farming area is designed to install a water supply system directly from streams to the dam; build water tanks, breeding tanks, and maintenance tanks in a descending direction like the foot of terraced fields; build a synchronous upstream water treatment system and wastewater treatment system; use cover nets to reduce the impact of light and temperature...
The current sturgeon farming process in Khe Tien is a VietGAP standard process. From this scientific tank system, a suitable living environment has been created for thousands of sturgeon per year, ensuring survival rate, growth and development rate, and ensuring nutritional quality.
At the end of the farming process, Khe Tien sturgeon weighs 2-5kg/fish, sells for 200,000 VND/kg, bringing in a revenue of billions of VND/year.
From the initiative of the Northeast Agricultural and Fisheries Development Cooperative, many households in Khe Tien also boldly invested capital, area, and labor to participate in sturgeon farming, becoming members or shareholders of the cooperative.
Currently, along with the development pace of Dong Van commune, as well as Binh Lieu district (Quang Ninh province), Khe Tien village is gradually becoming an ideal tourist destination.
Visitors come to Khe Tien to experience the beautiful natural space, majestic mountains and forests, fresh air, and the fragrant scent of anise and cinnamon forests.
Khe Tien people now know how to repair their rammed earth houses to welcome guests. Homestays have sprung up beautifully in the mountains and forests, where visitors can learn about the traditional culture of the indigenous people, learn about the techniques of sewing and embroidering costumes, the songs, and the sounds of musical instruments that resonate in the mountains and forests...
