Since childhood, Do Pham Nguyet Thanh (born in 1995, Ho Chi Minh City) has faced and witnessed her parents passing through death's door many times. Her father had bronchial asthma, her mother had congenital heart disease, and she had to take care of the family alone when they were hospitalized. Those memories inspired Nguyet Thanh to become a doctor, first of all to take care of her family's health and, more importantly, the health of everyone around her. After graduating from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Nguyet Thanh worked at the Military Science Department, Military Hospital 175. She currently holds the rank of Second Lieutenant and holds the role of doctor and foreign affairs assistant. "I always feel proud that the medical profession is honored and respected by society. I have just entered the medical career, and I am still continuing to study, cultivate and improve myself to be able to help more people," the female lieutenant shared with Dan Tri reporter.

Desire to contribute to the community

Nguyet Thanh's father is a soldier who fought on the Cambodian battlefield. She often heard her father talk about his days in the army and shared with him about her military life in peacetime. "My father's stories and lifestyle have instilled in me patriotism, appreciation of independence and freedom as well as the disciplined lifestyle of a soldier, courage and sacrifice for the common mission and for everyone," she said. Her mother is a primary school teacher at a charity school, Thanh was taught early on about sympathy, understanding and gratitude for what others have given her. Inspired by her family, she always aspires to carry out community projects. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Nguyet Thanh was assigned to be the Deputy Commander of the 115 Emergency Call Center in Ho Chi Minh City. At that time, as a young doctor who had just graduated, she had no experience in emergency work, managing and coordinating emergency patients, so she was under a lot of pressure. "There were days when I could only cry and felt like giving up everything because every time I picked up the call center, a person passed away," she recalled.

The number of calls increased day by day, with the peak of the epidemic reaching 6,000-7,000 calls/day with 200 volunteers on duty 24/7, but the switchboard seemed overloaded. The young female doctor worked, learned, and learned from experience to do better every day. Thanh still remembers crying a lot when her neighbor got Covid-19 from her son, a medical student, who was fighting the epidemic. Although she tried to find the nearest hospital and mobilize an ambulance, in the end, she could do nothing more. Another time, a call from a 3-year-old boy saying "Miss, please help my mother, my father just passed away" made her heart ache. "Calls like that still haunt me to this day," the female lieutenant confided. At that difficult time, the girl born in 1995 was fortunate to receive support and companionship from relatives, colleagues, and friends. She and her family made more than 30,000 face shields, cooked more than 400 meals per day to send to hospitals and frontline medical centers, and mobilized more than 200 gifts for disadvantaged children and orphans due to the Covid-19 pandemic from funds donated by benefactors. Thanks to these contributions, Nguyet Thanh received a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister for her outstanding achievements in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The female doctor was also awarded the title of Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2020 ; twice won the title of Beautiful Living Youth in 2021 and 2023.

Reach out to the world

Nguyet Thanh wishes to become an expert in the field of health management - health economics so that she can participate in health policy consulting, improve the quality of the hospital where she is working, the military health sector and the health sector of the whole country in general. To realize that goal, Thanh soon built a foundation of scientific research since her second year at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. That year, she received a scholarship to participate in a short-term training program in Belgium. During her one month here, the female student had the opportunity to meet and learn from leading professors in the world. Among them, Thanh was inspired by Professor Dominique Bron - former Head of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Vrije University, Belgium - that in order for medical staff to maximize their capacity, they need to possess the qualities of "treatment - scientific research - teaching". Since then, Thanh has become the author and co-author of many domestic and international scientific studies, winning high awards in competitions such as: First prize at the 1st Young Scientists Conference on Biotechnology - Biomedicine Application in Clinical Medical Treatment in 2019; gold medal in the Design - Manufacturing - Application Competition in 2016 ; second prize in the Community Health Creative Solutions Competition in 2016. "Winning awards in scientific research helps me feel more confident about my career choice and my own abilities. It is also the motivation for me to continue to carry out community-oriented research projects on a larger scale such as multi-center, multinational research," she shared.

Nguyet Thanh has the opportunity to participate in many international exchange programs.
Over the years, Nguyet Thanh has had the opportunity to visit 20 countries around the world, participating in many international exchange and volunteer programs. In 2018, Thanh was the head of the Vietnamese delegation participating in the East Asia - Japan Youth and Student Exchange Program (JENESYS) . In 2020, she was an outstanding delegate in the field of Culture - Society at the ASEAN - Korea Pioneer Youth Forum 2020. In addition, the young female doctor was also a delegate to the Youth Exchange program organized by the Indian Cadet Corps in 2017; delegate to the Yowunpura International Youth Festival in Sri Lanka in 2018. Of all those experiences, Thanh remembers the ASEAN - China Student Volunteer Campaign organized by the Student Volunteer Organization - Ministryof Education of Malaysia in Sarawak (Malaysia) in 2018 the most. "That was the first time I learned about and started to learn about the United Nations' sustainable development goals and implemented volunteer projects with the motto "low cost - high impact" with international students. I learned how to analyze the core problems of a community, thereby proposing practical solutions and optimizing efficiency", she shared. International exchange and volunteer programs gave Thanh more knowledge, improved her English, international integration skills, made more new relationships and especially changed her perspective on regional and world issues. In particular, female lieutenants learn to be meticulous in their work, professional, and confident when presenting or expressing personal opinions in front of a group.

Youth train

Recently, Nguyet Thanh and 10 outstanding youth delegates from Vietnam participated in the 2023 Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP 2023) which took place for 10 days in Japan. With the trust of the Central Youth Union, she was assigned the task of "youth leader".

Nguyet Thanh was assigned the task of "youth leader" of the Vietnamese delegation attending the "SSEAYP 2023" program in Japan.
In this role, Thanh redeployed tasks to other delegates in the delegation under the direction of comrade Nguyen Nhat Linh - Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Head of the delegation. She had to find a way to assign tasks suitable to the strengths of each delegate, ensuring the political , cultural and social aspects of the products introduced to international friends and especially on schedule as requested by Japan. "I also had to urge the youth delegates in the delegation to ensure punctuality, discipline and enthusiasm in the activities," she shared. Thanh said that her work was certainly more difficult than the others, but she had the opportunity to pay a courtesy visit to Mr. Kishida Fumio - Prime Minister of Japan - at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo, and to pay a courtesy visit to Princess Kako - granddaughter of Emperor Naruhito - and the Japanese Royal Family at the Tokyo Imperial Palace. The female doctor also represented the Vietnamese delegation to speak at the closing ceremony of the program in front of the Japanese Cabinet Office, ambassadors of Southeast Asian countries in Japan and delegates participating in the program. For Thanh, the homestay program (staying at a local's house) was the most interesting activity. Here, she wore kimono for the first time, visited and took photos with Mount Fuji, cooked traditional Japanese dishes such as: Takoyaki, sukiyaki hotpot, ramen, sushi... She also taught the children in the house to say some common Vietnamese sentences such as "Hello", "Thank you", how to introduce their names and let them try on traditional ao dai. "I know that Japanese people have a gift-giving culture, so I prepared gifts with strong Vietnamese identity to give to my foster family as souvenirs," she shared.

Returning from the trip, Nguyet Thanh learned more about diplomatic protocol in organizing important programs, discussed with experts and international friends about issues in the field of health and medicine as well as proposed measures to ensure fairness and improve the quality of the health care system of countries around the world. "Vietnam needs to immediately start preparing in all aspects for the aging population in the coming years. I think all of that is very necessary for me in advising, implementing foreign affairs as well as training at the unit," said the female lieutenant.
