Participating in revolutionary activities since the age of 12, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong has gone through many different missions to protect and preserve the country. Recalling the unforgettable years of her life, Ms. Phuong said: “At the age of 12, I joined the female guerilla in the commune. My family was the base of the Inter-zone 5 battlefield. At that time, I worked to help people fight against illiteracy and hunger. Besides, I also joined the guerrillas. After the liberation of Dien Bien Phu, I no longer joined the female guerrillas but was sent by the Party, the State, and Uncle Ho to the North to study at the Southern students' school. When the American invaders attacked the North, I joined the anti-enemy work in 1971”.

Working under bombs and bullets, Ms. Phuong always maintained an optimistic and life-loving spirit: “Revolutionary activities were fun even though bombs and bullets were flying. Every few days, someone was injured or died, but we were not afraid.”
Once, Mrs. Phuong collapsed in a tunnel while working, even though she was pregnant. Mrs. Phuong said: “I have two children, aged 6 and 4. While I was working, I pulled my two children along, and as soon as I got there and got into the tunnel, the enemy shot and collapsed the tunnel. My two children also collapsed, and there was another baby in my belly. When I was pulled out to the dike, I gave birth to the baby. It was very difficult at that time, and my husband was also a war invalid.”
In peacetime, Ms. Phuong always wants to contribute her efforts to the work of protecting and building the country.

Ms. Phuong said: “There are many children who are only 12 or 13 years old and have dropped out of school. I asked the government to do the work of reforming them. When I arrived at the drug den, I saw that the children were very aggressive and even wanted to fight. But when they saw me - Ms. Phuong coming, they did not dare. Seeing that they did not have money for health check-ups and paperwork to go to drug rehabilitation, I would be the one to do the paperwork for them. The 109 children who went to drug rehabilitation had all 109 decisions signed by the government.”
Regarding the charity kitchen, Ms. Phuong said that the kitchen was born when she witnessed many children dropping out of school and wandering around and many elderly people having no place to live. Every day, she and her two colleagues cook hundreds of meals to help the unfortunate. This activity has been maintained for the past 30 years.
