Reuters quoted sources as saying that the administration of US President Joe Biden has lifted regulations preventing Ukraine from using weapons provided by Washington to attack deep inside Russian territory.
On the same day, the New York Times newspaper quoted anonymous US government officials confirming that Mr. Biden had allowed Ukraine to use Army Tactical Ballistic Missiles (ATACMS) provided by Washington to attack Russian territory.
According to sources, Ukraine plans to carry out its first long-range strikes in the coming days.
The decision was made by the current US administration just over 2 months before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, 2025.
Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had repeatedly asked Washington to allow Kiev to use US weapons to attack military targets deep inside Russian territory.
The move is believed to be related to information about the presence of North Korean soldiers in Russia's Kursk province, which "led to the need" to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian army.
However, Moscow has exposed the fact that Washington has no confirmation of the alleged presence of North Korean troops in Russia's special military operation, while Pyongyang has criticized these allegations.
Although some US officials have expressed skepticism that the decision to allow Ukraine to use US weapons to strike deep inside Russian territory will change the overall trajectory of the conflict, the move could help Kiev at a time when Moscow is gaining ground on the front lines.
The move could also put the pro-Western Eastern European nation in a better bargaining position if ceasefire talks take place, officials said.
Following the above news, the French daily Le Figaro reported on November 17 that France and the UK have also followed the US lead, allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory with long-range SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles.
However, the Pentagon has refused to comment, while the White House and the State Department have yet to respond to TASS 's questions about the information. Meanwhile, France and Britain have not commented on Le Figaro's news.
On the Russian side, TASS quoted the country's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin " spoke out" on this issue, but did not elaborate.
Previously, Russia warned that Moscow would consider the move to loosen restrictions on Ukraine's use of US long-range weapons as a serious escalation.
