Pioneer farmers raising specialty animals of Phu Nhuan commune
Visiting the bamboo rat breeding model of Mr. Nguyen Duc Huan's family, in Phu Phuong 1 village, Phu Nhuan commune, Nhu Thanh district (Thanh Hoa province), we were very impressed by the scale as well as the thorough investment in barns of Mr. Huan's family in breeding this specialty.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Huan said that in 2018, he went to many places to learn about the bamboo rat farming model, so he decided to invest more than 100 million VND in building a barn to develop the bamboo rat farming model. Thanks to his diligence in learning about bamboo rat farming techniques, Mr. Huan's family's bamboo rat herd has always developed well and is disease-free.
According to Mr. Huan, his family's bamboo rats are being sold in many households in Thanh Hoa province and many other provinces and cities for about 3 million VND/pair (1 pair is about 2kg). In addition, Mr. Huan's family also sells bamboo rats for nearly 10 million VND/pair. Every year, Mr. Huan's family earns more than 100 million VND/year from the bamboo rat breeding model.
Currently, Mr. Huan is continuing to expand the scale and multiply the breeding herd to 300 rats to meet market demand.
Also in Phu Phuong 1 village, Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan is one of the pioneer households raising porcupines in the commune. Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan shared: "After researching, I found that porcupines are easy to raise and suitable for the family's conditions. So in 2014, my family boldly invested 500 million to build a porcupine farm."

Mr. Nhan added that raising porcupines is very easy and does not take much time. Porcupine food is also easy to find, and taking care of them is not difficult, because porcupines rarely get sick and have a low loss rate.
Talking about the technique of raising porcupines, Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan said that the porcupine cage only needs to be built simply, with a cement floor, then the cage is fixed with an iron frame or bricks. If well cared for, fed adequately, and the cage is kept clean, porcupines grow very quickly and reproduce a lot.
If raised properly, 1 male hedgehog can mate with 2 to 3 female hedgehogs and still reproduce. Each pair gives birth to 2 litters per year, each litter has 2 to 3 babies, a mother hedgehog can reproduce for 10 years.
The porcupine farming model of Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan in Phu Phuong 1 village, Phu Nhuan commune, Nhu Thanh district has initially brought economic efficiency to his family.
Currently, on an area of over 200 square meters, his family is raising 50 porcupines, including 20 parent porcupines. After deducting expenses, Mr. Nhan earns about 100 million VND/year from raising porcupines.
Also with the desire to build a model of raising high-value specialty animals, Mr. Le Duc Hoa in Dong Sinh village, Phu Nhuan commune, Nhu Thanh district (Thanh Hoa province) has researched and learned many different breeding models. In 2018, after going to Ha Tinh to ask about the model of raising deer for velvet, Mr. Hoa invested 500 million VND to buy breeding animals and build barns to raise deer.

According to Mr. Hoa, deer are small eaters and do not require much care. However, breeders only need to pay attention when the deer start to grow antlers, they need to supplement nutritious foods such as bananas, corn, carrots, soybeans, etc. and have a more special care regimen to achieve the best weight and quality of antlers.
"Male deer are about 2 years old when they start harvesting velvet. The time to harvest velvet is from the end of January to the 5th lunar month. Each deer produces 1.5 - 3 taels of velvet per year. A mature deer produces 6 - 7 taels of velvet per year. The larger the deer, the more velvet it has. Some deer can produce velvet twice a year.
"Deer velvet is currently sold for about 1.5 to 2 million VND/tael," added Mr. Le Duc Hoa in Dong Sinh village, Phu Nhuan commune, Nhu Thanh district (Thanh Hoa province).
