Journey to nurture treasures
Since ancient times, Ngoc Linh ginseng in Kon Tum has been used by the Xe Dang people as a "hidden medicinal plant", curing many diseases according to traditional medicine.
As of June 2022, the company owns more than 60 showrooms and more than 100 dealer stores.
In 1972, when the war was fierce, the Civilian Medical Department of Zone 5 set out to find medicinal plants to nourish the soldiers. Knowing that the "hidden medicinal plants" of the local people had the effect of improving health, the department sent a team of pharmacists to find them. From here, the working group began their journey up Ngoc Linh mountain to find precious medicinal plants.
A year later, the group found this plant growing in a population at an altitude of 1,800 m above sea level on the Ngoc Linh mountain range in Kon Tum province.
In 1985, Dr. Ha Thi Dung and Professor Grushvizky identified this as a new species to science and endemic to Vietnam, scientifically named Panax Vietnamensis Ha et Grushv.
Ngoc Linh ginseng is grown under the canopy of old forests at an altitude of 2,000 m.
However, after many years of being discovered, Ngoc Linh ginseng is at risk of being exhausted by people.
Facing the risk of Ngoc Linh ginseng becoming extinct, more than 20 years ago in Kon Tum province - Mr. Tran Hoan - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company has always been concerned about preserving Ngoc Linh ginseng. He has started collecting natural Ngoc Linh ginseng plants for breeding.
"In 1997, I started collecting Ngoc Linh ginseng from people in the communes around Ngoc Linh mountain to breed. After only a few years, the sprouts produced flowers and seeds. Just like that, I had a whole garden of original ginseng, preserving the original precious genetic source as well as perfecting the process of sowing and caring for Ngoc Linh ginseng," Mr. Hoan confided.
The successful propagation and conservation of ginseng plants under the forest canopy was the premise for the establishment of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company in 2006. Along with that, the company was assigned 5,000 hectares of land by Kon Tum province to continue expanding the scale of Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation.
From here, Mr. Hoan continued to develop the ginseng garden according to his original wishes. However, at that time, the material conditions were very poor and encountered many difficulties; Ngoc Linh ginseng was easily destroyed by birds and rats from seeds to tubers. These were also the major obstacles that made Mr. Hoan and his companions very worried.
Besides, Ngoc Linh ginseng is also a type of ginseng that few people know about and there is little information and care materials, making this journey even more difficult.
Ignoring the difficulties and continuing the mission of developing Ngoc Linh ginseng, Mr. Hoan and his colleagues have diligently researched how to grow and care for ginseng. The difficulties were eventually overcome and the sweet fruit has ripened.

In January 2018, Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh Ginseng brand was officially launched on the market, including products extracted from Ngoc Linh ginseng roots over 10 years old with abundant medicinal properties.

Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company is one of the rare units to date that has been certified by the Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee for its original ginseng garden.

Up to now, Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh Ginseng has owned 7,000 hectares of growing area, 1,000 hectares of ginseng are being cared for and developed, of which more than 200 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng are over 10 years old. As of June 2022, the company has owned more than 60 showrooms, more than 100 dealer stores, more than 300 sales collaborators nationwide.
Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company sponsors the National Football Championship continuously from the 2022 season to the end of the 2024 season.
Not stopping at preserving the original genetic source of Ngoc Linh ginseng, Ngoc Linh Kon Tum K5 ginseng also silently protects the primeval forests as well as creates livelihoods for the people here.
In 2022, the company exported more than 2 million Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings to the nursery to grow and develop medicinal plants. This is a strategy to turn this precious medicinal plant into a product to reduce poverty, even enrich many villages and Xe Dang people.
Not only that, the company also creates jobs for thousands of Xe Dang households. It provides tens of thousands of free seedlings each year for local people to develop their economy. This continuous companionship has helped change people's awareness in forest management and protection combined with medicinal plant cultivation.
