The fear of "white pollution" from the habit of using plastic in the fields

Việt NamViệt Nam23/01/2024

The use of nylon by Ha Tinh farmers to surround their fields helps prevent rats and adverse weather effects from damaging rice, but also poses a risk of environmental pollution.

The fear of

Mr. Dang Ngoc Tuan uses plastic to surround rice fields to limit damage from rats.

After 4 days of planting nearly 2 sao of spring rice in Gia field, Mr. Dang Ngoc Tuan (born in 1968, TDP K130, Nghen town, Can Loc district) brought many bamboo sticks and 2 kg of nylon to surround the rice field, limiting damage by rats.

According to Mr. Tuan, when the rice was first planted, the rice fields were still wet and rats could not destroy them, but after only 3-4 days, the water dried up and rats appeared and ate the rice seeds.

Pointing to the countless mouse footprints left behind, Mr. Tuan said: "A few days after sowing, I had to cover the rice with plastic to protect it, but because of family matters, I was only able to do it now. It was only a few days late and mice appeared and ate a corner of the rice seeds."

The fear of

Cheap but effective, so most people use nylon in every crop.

According to Mr. Tuan, before the start of the crop season, local people and authorities had also implemented some measures to trap and catch rats in the fields. However, due to the large number, it was impossible to handle all of them, so when the spring rice was planted, the rats damaged the rice again.

And to limit the damage caused by rats to crops, along with continuing to use traps and catch them, people use plastic wrap around rice fields. Farmers believe that this is the most effective way to prevent rats from damaging crops.

“This season, my family planted 6 sao of rice, so we needed to use 6 kg of nylon. This type of nylon bag costs 28-30 thousand VND/kg and can only be used for one season. At the end of the rice season, when the nylon is damaged, I usually collect it and burn it or put it in tanks in the fields,” said Mr. Dang Ngoc Tuan.

The fear of

The amount of nylon that people use in each production season is very large, leading to the risk of environmental pollution.

It is noted that at this time, people in localities in Ha Tinh are entering the spring rice planting season. This year's spring rice crop, the whole province produced 59,107 hectares (direct sowing area 31,778 hectares, transplanting area 1,681 hectares).

To protect rice from damage by rats or adverse weather conditions, most people use plastic wrap around their fields. And after each crop season, it is not difficult to see plastic wrap thrown haphazardly on the roads and edges of the fields.

The purpose of farmers using nylon is understandable, however, due to its difficult to decompose nature, nylon poses a great risk of environmental pollution. This is a real threat to human health and the ecosystem, posing many pressures and challenges to protecting the living environment.

The fear of

In the natural environment, nylon takes hundreds of years to decompose.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Head of the Environment Department (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ha Tinh) said: According to research, in the natural environment, nylon takes hundreds of years to decompose. In the case of burial, nylon waste pollutes the soil and water environment, hinders the growth and development of plants and is also the cause of soil erosion, affecting the ecological development in the area.

Burning nylon creates toxic emissions containing dioxin and furan, which cause poisoning, affect the endocrine system, reduce immunity, disrupt digestive function and cause birth defects in children. More dangerously, it can cause cancer.

The fear of

People need to join hands in limiting and minimizing the use of nylon.

In recent times, authorities at all levels and functional sectors have also actively propagated to the people about the harmful effects of the habit of using nylon, at the same time proposing a number of solutions to limit and minimize environmental problems caused by the use and disposal of packaging that is difficult to decompose. However, the results have not been really high.

To limit and reduce the use of nylon requires the cooperation of the whole community. Each person should change the habit of using nylon packaging, limit the risk of "white pollution", and protect the environment to be truly green, clean and beautiful.
