Recently, CEO of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) Alexey Likhachev commented that the risk of the Kursk nuclear power plant being attacked is very high.

On September 3, Sputnik news agency quoted Mr. Likhachev as saying that air raid warning signals regularly sounded in Kursk, where Ukraine has been conducting an infiltration and attack campaign since August 6.

“So far, there have been no attacks on the buildings housing the complexes, but a large number of missiles were shot down when approaching, and a large number of drones were disabled outside the complexes. Therefore, the risk is very high,” he said.

According to Mr. Likhachev, the Kursk nuclear power plant is an important energy supply point for the region. Rosatom is making efforts to ensure the lives of plant employees as well as residents of the city of Kurchatov - where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located.

The plant is currently operating normally, with two units shut down, the fourth unit undergoing planned repairs and the third unit operating at full capacity.

On the same day, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said that he discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the safety issue of the Kursk nuclear power plant during his visit to Ukraine on September 3.

The head of the IAEA reaffirmed the importance of avoiding a situation that could lead to a radiological emergency there and believed that President Zelensky understood the message he wanted to convey that nuclear power plants should not be the target of attack.

The warnings were issued amid reports from US officials that Washington is about to approve a plan to transfer a batch of long-range cruise missiles that would allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory.

Accordingly, the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) could be part of a new arms aid package that the US government will announce this fall. However, a final decision has yet to be made.

In response to this information, on September 4, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned the West and Ukraine that Moscow would respond immediately and “extremely painfully” in the event of Kiev launching a long-range attack on Russian territory.
