Nicaraguan police accuse Miss Universe event director Celebertti of rigging the beauty pageant to crown an anti-government activist.
RT on December 3 quoted a statement from Nicaraguan police on December 1 accusing Karen Celebertti, the copyright owner of the country's Miss Universe pageant, of carrying out a coup plot by crowning an anti-government activist and sending him to compete in the international Miss Universe contest.
Miss Universe Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios, 23, last month beat out 83 contestants to win the Miss Universe 2023 crown.

After Palacios was crowned, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega quickly sent his congratulations, saying her victory in the international beauty pageant was a "rightful source of joy and pride" for the country. However, it later emerged that Miss Palacios had participated in anti-government protests in Nicaragua in 2018.
Nicaraguan authorities accused Celebertti of arranging the crowning of Miss Palacios to "turn beauty pageants into political traps and surprise attacks, funded by foreign agents".
The Nicaraguan National Police also said that Celebertti had previously been active in anti-government activities through street protests and on the Internet.
Nicaraguan police added that Celebertti, her husband and son face treason charges. According to Reuters , Celebertti was banned from entering Nicaragua in October, while her husband and son are in custody.
Miss Palacios has not commented on the information. After being crowned Miss Universe 2023, she has not returned to her country and is currently in New York, USA.
