Important destination of global supply chain

This is the information given by buyers around the world at the event series Connecting the international supply chain - Viet Nam International Sourcing 2023. Mr. Olivier Langlet, General Director of Central Retail Group Vietnam said that Viet Nam International Sourcing is an opportunity for Vietnamese manufacturers to demonstrate their production capacity and export products globally.

This commitment has been realized through many initiatives. Typically, capacity building training workshops; Vietnamese Goods Week in Thailand... Over the past three decades, Vietnam has made significant strides in raw material production, enhancing its position in the international market. Mr. Olivier Langlet emphasized that agricultural products and food will be the key areas that Central Retail is actively seeking sustainable partners in Vietnam. Accordingly, typical products with strengths of Vietnam, especially new products, good for health, natural sources, organic farming; products with quality management and traceability through blockchain technology; products belonging to key programs, circular economy... will be the products that are of special interest to seek.

It is known that the annual purchasing volume of Thailand's leading retail group in Vietnam averages over 100 million USD/year - despite many complex fluctuations in the international market over the past time.

Appreciating the series of events Viet Nam International Sourcing, Mr. Avaneesh Gupta - Head of Sourcing for General Merchandise and Apparel of Walmart Supermarket - said that this is an exciting opportunity for Walmart to connect with Vietnamese businesses, in the context that the system continues to seek diversity in the supply chain and provide quality products to customers.

Mr. Avaneesh Gupta said that Vietnam is one of Walmart's most important sourcing markets and is also a sourcing hub across Southeast Asia. The system's sourcing team facilitates the export of Vietnamese products globally, including to the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and China.

Accordingly, Vietnam's top export items include garments, hardware and household appliances, which are sought after by the group; at the same time, the unit is also actively seeking/purchasing food products, including seafood, cashew nuts, soy milk, coffee, fresh fruits and fruit snacks. "We look forward to engaging with more manufacturers to explore opportunities to source more products from Vietnam to meet domestic consumption needs as well as export worldwide. We appreciate the people, workers, businesses and resources of Vietnam for helping to export responsibly produced products globally," Mr. Avaneesh Gupta emphasized.

What businesses do to take advantage of opportunities

According to Mr. Avaneesh Gupta, in addition to traditional suppliers, the unit is constantly looking for new suppliers to diversify the supply chain. To select suppliers, this retailer focuses on criteria such as the scale of the supplier in terms of both products and markets.

“We are looking for the best suppliers in key markets. Europe, for example, is the leading supplier of high-quality olive oil. India is the leader in quality frozen shrimp and tilapia. And Vietnam is the leading country in garment supply and is increasingly developing in electronics,” Mr. Avaneesh Gupta emphasized.

In addition, the business is taking a data-driven approach to supply security. This helps the unit understand which product sources may be at risk and has developed strategies to mitigate the impact of supply disruptions on sellers, to ensure we always have the right products on shelves.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lionel Adenot, Director of Decathlon Vietnam, said that Vietnam has a great opportunity to become a new destination in the international sportswear supply chain. However, to do this, a long-term vision is needed. In the medium-term plan, businesses must be ready to adjust, modify... according to market changes. Currently, Decathlon is looking for suppliers with autonomy. This helps businesses meet the requirement of self-sufficiency in supply. To do this, businesses must have a transformation. The first is digital transformation in production. Businesses must use automated warehouses, RFID quality traceability systems, energy monitoring,... These are just a few examples of what businesses must do.

“We have to think digitally and so developing a digital culture and mindset is an urgent issue for Vietnamese suppliers,” Mr. Lionel Adenot affirmed.

Along with that, businesses need to shorten delivery times because this will help distribution systems be flexible in forecasting supply and sales. In addition, businesses need to prioritize the use of local raw materials, because using local raw materials will help reduce the risk of supply chain disruption as well as improve the ability to utilize green products.

In addition, the company must continue to minimize its environmental impact by reducing emissions. In 2022, the company's CO2 emissions from its production activities in Vietnam decreased by 17% compared to 2019 and 10% compared to 2021. In 2023, the company will continue to reduce emissions by completely switching to renewable energy, such as solar and biomass. "For me, these are the conditions for Vietnam to become a new destination in the international sportswear supply chain," Mr. Lionel Adenot emphasized.
