Green manufacturing: Contributing to realizing the goal of net zero emissions Chairman of Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association explains why investment in green transformation is still modest

Sharing at the opening ceremony of the Export Forum with the theme "Connecting international supply chains" this morning, September 13, Mr. Hoang Ve Dung - Chairman of Duc Giang Corporation said that currently, green growth and circular economy are inevitable trends and are one of the top priorities in the development policies of many countries in the world for sustainable development, especially when the world's resources are increasingly depleted.

According to Mr. Dung, to date, promoting sustainable production and consumption has always been a concern of countries around the world. Accordingly, many countries around the world have had policies, regulations and specific programs on sustainable production and consumption.

In the world, the leading regions in green and sustainable development are the United States and the European Union (EU), in which the European Green Deal - a comprehensive plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, is also a strategy for development.

In addition, the EU has also recently proposed a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) - this mechanism will put a price on carbon on imported goods to ensure that European emissions reductions contribute to global emissions reductions. With the strategy on sustainable textiles, the European Union (EU) requires that the design stage must be ecologically designed and the production and consumption process must ensure sustainable consumption.

Along with that, in response to the general development trend of the world, at the Climate Change Summit held within the framework of the COP26 Conference, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced Vietnam's commitment to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, putting Vietnam on par with many other countries committed to stopping emissions by the middle of this century.

Implementing the Prime Minister's strategy for developing the Vietnamese textile and garment industry to 2030, with a vision to 2035, Mr. Hoang Ve Dung said: "Duc Giang Corporation has been actively preparing for long-term development; in which, the set goal is to promote value chain development and market development, meeting the requirements of partners on the use of recycled and environmentally friendly raw materials".

In that context, at the enterprise level - the core of the economy, Duc Giang Corporation, many years ago, built a strong transformation roadmap in design according to the trend of the times, green production trend, searching and establishing new supply chains.

"This not only meets the increasing demand for fashion, recycling and emission reduction criteria, but also helps to enhance the position of the enterprise, while increasing market share and creating more added value" - Mr. Dung said and emphasized that for Duc Giang Corporation, the transition to circular production is the process of greening production, associated with sustainable development.

In order to emphasize savings in production and business activities, protect the environment, reduce carbon emissions through areas such as waste and wastewater treatment, use of clean energy, use of recycled materials and promote environmentally friendly consumption solutions, in recent times, Duc Giang Corporation has proposed and implemented many ideas in the transition to circular production.

Firstly, Duc Giang Corporation has been implementing innovative initiatives in production and business activities such as saving 10% of electricity, 20% of water, 5-10% of raw materials, minimizing the use of paper documents in meetings, not using plastic bottles and packaging, etc. This is part of the company's efforts to reduce carbon.

Second, the company prioritizes the use of renewable energy; Third, the company is focusing on finding and prioritizing the use of suppliers of raw materials with sustainable certification; Fourth, Duc Giang Corporation has focused on transforming designs according to the trend of the times. With the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) technology, 3D modeling technology, developing new product models is faster, more accurate, saving more human resources, materials, and time.

"This helps businesses quickly respond to changing customer and market needs. At the same time, it helps save time in the prototyping process, minimizing the use of raw materials for sewing samples" - Mr. Hoang Ve Dung informed.

In particular, Duc Giang Corporation has been searching for and establishing new supply chains that meet fashion, recycling and emission reduction standards. For the domestic fashion sector, the company has applied used clothing collection programs to encourage customers to return old clothes for recycling, thereby reducing waste; implementing marketing campaigns to raise consumer awareness of recycled products and sustainable raw materials to raise consumer awareness of the importance of sustainable fashion and applying circularity to encourage customers to consume responsibly.

In parallel, Duc Giang Corporation is cooperating with reputable training organizations to improve employees' understanding of green production, sustainable production, circular economy and encourage new ideas.

However, this is still a challenge for many small and medium-sized textile and garment enterprises in Vietnam due to limited financial resources. To truly become a green production supply chain, research and development of green materials in Vietnam is still limited. Because green, environmentally friendly fabrics are often of natural origin, advanced processing technology is needed to ensure that the inherent properties of the fibers are retained. In addition, investment in renewable energy applications and wastewater treatment management will significantly increase production costs.

Therefore, through the Export Forum event "Connecting international supply chains" and Vietnam International Sourcing Expo 2023 this time, the enterprise hopes that partners, customers, and investors will continue to support and assist Vietnamese enterprises in building a comprehensive supply chain, contributing to accelerating the process of green, sustainable production transformation, protecting the environment for Vietnam and around the world.

Attending the Export Forum event "Connecting international supply chains" and Vietnam International Sourcing Expo 2023, Mr. Hoang Ve Dung said that the enterprise aims to promote the vision of the enterprise as a reliable partner in the textile and garment sector, while building a trustworthy relationship with international importers and distributors.

"Through the products displayed at the booth, we want to promote and share with customers the achievements we have researched and successfully implemented, and at the same time hope to find potential partners from different countries to cooperate in building value chains in Vietnam, and to cooperate in expanding export and domestic markets on the basis of mutual benefit" - Mr. Hoang Ve Dung said.
