Reporters with a destiny to win awards: Journalism requires both passion and responsibility

In the mountainous province of Lao Cai, there are reporters who are very "destined" to win the award. They not only have enthusiasm and passion but also a sense of responsibility for their profession to create the highest quality journalistic works.

Awakening the Aspiration of Ta Phin, The Guide, May's Journey..., topics associated with characters bearing the extremely special mark of the highlands have helped journalist Le Lien - Lao Cai Provincial Radio and Television Station win the National Golden Hammer and Sickle Journalism Award for 4 consecutive years, the pinnacle of which was the A prize in 2021.

According to journalist Le Lien, a convincing article must have valuable details that the author needs to be subtle in order to capture. Those details are sometimes the key to open the doors behind. Details can be discovered in conferences, through reports, even in the products of colleagues, but after the initial discovery, one must commit to go into the depth of the topic and characters.

"If we don't pay attention to the details and just listen like that and then say that people are good, they are not. In fact, those people always have a process of striving and dedication. We have to work hard to learn and then we will see the good and beautiful things in life, only then we will discover them. If we just come, just listen, just know like that and then go back, we certainly won't have such characters," said journalist Le Lien.

Journalist Le Lien has received the National Golden Hammer and Sickle Press Award four times.

As for reporter Phung Duyen of the Culture - Sports and Communications Center of Van Ban district, Lao Cai province, promoting one's own advantages and understanding the rules of the game also brings a competitive advantage when participating in journalism competitions.

Phung Duyen shared that working at the grassroots propaganda unit is not considered as journalism activities according to regulations. Although still called reporters, none of the members of the grassroots are members of the Journalists Association, nor are they granted journalist cards, and have few opportunities to receive training and professional experience, leading to many difficulties in participating in competitions. Every time they want to participate in a competition, they have to send their collaborative works to agencies such as the provincial radio station or newspaper to have their products recognized.

However, every year, reporter Phung Duyen has 3-4 works that win local journalism awards; has won B and C prizes in the National Journalism Award for Natural Disaster Prevention; most recently, the Encouragement Prize in the Writing Contest "Protecting the Party's Ideological Foundation". Ms. Duyen said that she was "lucky" to win the award because she was closest to the grassroots.

"The people at the grassroots level also have certain limitations. From those limitations, we have to choose topics that are close to daily life, we can feel them and express them better. There are countless topics, the important thing is what we choose and how we nurture it. Once we nurture it, during the process of going to the grassroots level, we will discover characters to pursue, so the work will be of better quality," said journalist Phung Duyen.

Having just returned from a trip to the capital to receive the C prize of the first National Press Award on the National Assembly and People's Council (also known as the Dien Hong Award), journalist Tran Tuan Ngoc of Lao Cai Newspaper joked that the first season of competition always has a higher chance of winning a prize.

With his strengths in reportage and memoirs, series of articles such as Untying the Ha Nhi women; Ambassadors of the people's hearts in the highland border areas; The teacher who brought the fire to the highlands... both realistic and rich in literature have helped Tuan Ngoc, from an amateur teacher to a journalist, to return to the central government at least 10 times to receive awards from many ministries and branches.

Mr. Ngoc shared that each land, story, and character that journalism leads to are associated with interesting experiences. However, to stick with the profession for a long time and create many quality products, one cannot follow inspiration but must have a serious training process to overcome difficult times.

"There are times when I am very enthusiastic, and there are times when I feel down and tired. But after such down periods, the important thing is that I continue my journey of passion. I travel a lot, meet a lot, talk a lot, write a lot, read a lot. Reading the works of my colleagues, the works that I am passionate about, the fire inside me burns again," Ngoc shared.

Journalist Tuan Ngoc believes that journalism needs to promote social responsibility.

Journalist Tran Tuan Ngoc also believes that participating in journalism competitions gives him the opportunity to gain experience and affirm his career, and each season brings him more experience and new goals to conquer. More importantly, how the characters and issues mentioned will change through the impact of journalistic works, which is also the "social responsibility of writers".
