Outstanding young people in various fields
In the program of Exchange with candidates of Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces 2024, broadcast online at thanhnien.vn and Thanh Nien Newspaper's Facebook and YouTube channels on the morning of February 28, the audience had the opportunity to interact with outstanding young people in many fields.
Among them is Dr. Le Kim Hung, Head of the Department of Communications, Faculty of Computer Networks and Communications (University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City), representing young people with outstanding achievements in the field of scientific research. Dr. Hung has 2 international patents. Of which, the work "Research on adaptive sampling algorithms for devices in large-scale Internet of Things" was published in IEEE Access magazine in 2020 and patented in France in 2021. In addition, he has many other research projects...
Belief in the power and value of scientific research helps us solve practical problems, improve the quality of life and contribute to the development of society. Every time I do research, I always keep that in mind.
Dr. LE KIM HUNG, University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University)
Mr. Hung said that the project "Research on adaptive sampling algorithms for devices in large-scale Internet of Things" originated from a very practical problem of how to save energy for large-scale IoT systems (Internet of Things) with many low-cost battery-powered devices. In fact, when devices collect data, it will consume a lot of battery, reducing the life of the device as well as affecting the entire system. Therefore, the challenge is how to reduce energy by optimizing the collection frequency while still ensuring enough information for decision making or analysis later.
To optimize the device's energy, Hung's research proposes an algorithm that can learn the history of data, thereby helping the device automatically adjust the appropriate collection frequency.
"This project will help extend the life of the device, reduce the data traffic on the network, because when the collection frequency is reduced, the data is also reduced and thereby improving the stability of the system. I also hope that through this project, the potential for IoT applications will be opened up in many different fields such as environmental monitoring, smart agriculture...", Dr. Hung shared.
A shining example in the field of security and order is Captain Tran Vinh Chien, Deputy Head of Team 3, Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, Ho Chi Minh City Police.

Tran Vinh Chien's journey to the police force began with his childhood dream. When watching movies about criminal police, the image of brave police officers fighting to arrest criminals and maintain a peaceful life for the people made him admire and urged him to decide to pursue a career in the police force. Up to now, he has not only fulfilled his dream but also become a shining example for many young people to follow.
I always try my best to keep the peace for the people of the city. In the peace of the people of the city there is the peace of my family, so even if we have to sacrifice and work harder, we are still very happy.
Captain TRAN VINH CHIEN, Deputy Captain of Team 3, Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, Ho Chi Minh City Police.
Over the years, Captain Chien has contributed to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department in cracking down on many major drug cases. He has handled and investigated more than 40 cases with 130 defendants, seized more than 350 kg of various drugs and many other exhibits. Therefore, Mr. Chien is called "the nemesis of drug criminals". In 2024, he was honored to receive the Third Class Military Exploit Medal for his outstanding achievements in combat and combat service, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland...
Talking about the most impressive project, Mr. Chien immediately remembered the VN10 project to fight and destroy the drug trafficking ring originating from abroad into Vietnam, resulting in the seizure of 323 kg of various synthetic drugs, 12 guns, 67 bullets, and 3 grenades. This was one of the projects that Captain Chien participated in from the beginning and he himself said that he had matured a lot after this project.
Social peace and development are the driving force for striving.
No road is paved with roses, and neither is the journey of Dr. Hung and Captain Chien.
For Mr. Hung, failure, even multiple failures, is inevitable in scientific research. "There are times when ideas are very good but cannot be realized. Many times, ideas are realized but the experimental results are not as expected. Then there are times when the experimental results in the laboratory are suitable but when brought out, they cannot be implemented...", the young doctor said.
Giving advice to young people pursuing scientific research, Mr. Hung said: "Although there are many difficulties, as long as you have determination, you can still do it. Failure is a part of scientific research, the most important thing is to see where the problem lies and learn from it. Perseverance and not being afraid of failure are the keys on the path of scientific research."
Despite many failures, many difficulties and many hardships and challenges, the motivation for Dr. Hung to persevere in pursuing scientific research is: "The belief in the power and value of scientific research helps us solve practical problems, improve the quality of life and contribute to the development of society. Every time I do research, I always keep that in mind. And when I finish, I am very happy because I can contribute a small part to the common development of science and society."
As for Captain Chien, contributing to society is the happiest thing, even though the job always has to face many dangers. "Every job brings a certain value to society. My biggest wish is to be determined to reduce the supply and demand of drugs in the city. According to the assessment, drugs are the source of all crimes. In fact, in recent years, Ho Chi Minh City Police "We have stepped up the fight against drug crimes and have reduced other types of crimes, especially robberies. There are days and weeks when the city has no robberies. That is a great encouragement for us," Captain Chien confided.
He affirmed: "I always try my best to keep the peace for the people of the city. In the peace of the people of the city, there is the peace of my family, so even if we have to sacrifice and work harder, we are still very happy." He said that currently, almost all of his time is spent on work. If he has some free time, he and his teammates learn about new applications that criminals often use to form criminal groups; then learn how to disable or exploit data on those applications most effectively...
If he becomes one of the 10 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces of 2024, Mr. Chien said: "I will continue to make more efforts so that the people of the city can truly be at peace. Ho Chi Minh City will have more drug-free wards/communes, districts/counties, and drug-free areas. I also want to spread my enthusiasm to young people working in all fields to join hands and strive to contribute to the common development of the city and the country."
Dr. Hung shared: "I will continue what I am doing, try harder in scientific research to have more projects that bring value to society, solving current problems. I will also try harder in teaching to train many generations of excellent students to contribute to society."
