Since the first time he "tried donating blood for the experience", Nguyen Van Hieu (31 years old, Hanoi) has donated blood for 12 years with 124 times, becoming the person who donated the most blood among the 100 typical blood donors honored in 2024.

Hieu started donating blood when he was a student. For the first three years, he donated whole blood, then switched to donating platelets. Donating blood is now a habit for him. Even though he is busy with work, whenever the day comes, he will try to arrange his work to go.

Hieu humorously said that when it was time to donate blood but he was too busy to go, he felt like he was missing something, "like waking up in the morning without brushing his teeth!" Many times, he only read information on social networks that someone in the area needed emergency blood, so he and his colleagues asked to leave work early to donate blood on time.

Hieu's volunteerism has spread to many colleagues and in his later blood donation journey, he has many more friends to accompany him.

Honored to be the delegate with the most voluntary blood donations in this year's national honor, Mr. Hieu hopes that voluntary blood donation activities will be known and participated in more widely. This is also a beautiful memory for Mr. Hieu to show off to his daughter who was born a week ago.

Having been involved in blood donation since the 90s, up to now, Mr. Vu Dinh Pham (57 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) has donated blood 104 times.

In more than 30 years of donating blood, the thing that he remembers most and regrets the most is the case of a patient who had been transfused with more than 2 liters of blood but was still short of 2 units. When he angrily went to the hospital, the patient had already passed away. "If I had known about it earlier, it probably wouldn't have turned out like this. Since then, I have been donating blood regularly," Mr. Pham said tearfully.

Mr. Vu Dinh Pham (57 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) has donated blood 104 times.

With only 3 years left until the age limit for blood donation, Mr. Pham still hopes that if allowed, "even if I am over 60 years old, I will still donate". Because, having been involved in blood donation for decades, it has become an inevitable part of life.

15 years ago, Huynh Hai Binh’s father (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi) had to stay in the hospital for quite a long time. The hospital mobilized many of his relatives to donate blood to help treat the disease. In addition, his treatment process could not be without donated blood units.

From that opportunity, Mr. Binh's family joined the community of voluntary blood donors. Although he is busy with his job as a construction engineer, he always tries to arrange his work to donate blood four times a year.

In 2019, after a pre-donation blood test, the doctor advised Mr. Binh to switch to platelet donation. If the interval between whole blood donations was 3 months, Mr. Binh could leisurely arrange everything, but with a 3-week interval between platelet donations, he forced himself to practice better discipline. From eating nutritious food, not staying up late for long periods of time, to balancing the intensity of playing sports, he considered everything carefully. To date, he has donated blood and platelets more than 100 times.

Every Sunday, every 3 weeks, Ms. Trinh Thi Hong Thu has a special trip. Leaving home at 6 am, Ms. Thu travels more than 60 km from Luong Son, Hoa Binh to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to make the first platelet donations of the day.

The first idea of donating blood came to Thu when she went to visit a sick person in the hospital. Seeing the children in the hospital receiving blood transfusions, the heart of a mother could not help but feel pity. The first time she participated in voluntary blood donation, Thu could not help but feel worried and nervous. However, thinking about the sick person in need and the children that day, she bravely pushed aside her fear.

Ms. Trinh Thi Hong Thu has donated blood 105 times.

Every time Luong Son district organizes a blood donation festival, Ms. Thu registers to participate and actively encourages everyone to donate blood. Having been involved in the local blood donation movement for many years, Ms. Thu always worries and wishes that the local blood donation program would take place more frequently.

Since being introduced to platelet donation, Ms. Thu has visited the Institute more often than before. With the support of her family, including her sister and daughter who also actively donate blood, Ms. Thu has more motivation to do this volunteer work.

Although she has accumulated quite a few voluntary blood donation certificates, Thu still sometimes regrets: “I wish I had known about blood donation and platelet donation sooner”. Up to now, Thu has successfully donated blood and platelets 105 times.

Hong Thu’s older sister is also a familiar face to the staff at the Blood Component Reception Department, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. In fact, the distance from her sister’s house to the Institute is 30 kilometers further than Thu’s. Although she only has Sunday as her only day off, she still takes time to do volunteer work.

Meeting in Hanoi, sharing meaningful stories in the journey of voluntary blood donation, reminding each other to stay healthy to maintain regular blood donation time... the typical faces of voluntary blood donation this year all exude the spirit of sharing, the joy of donating blood to save people.
