Notes on traveling to Dien Bien on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory

One month before the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), tourist attractions in Dien Bien Phu city are crowded, many accommodations are full, and the weather is hot. Therefore, visitors planning to come here on this occasion need to plan carefully. Below are some notes for the trip.

Move

Airway

Currently, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air operate flights to Dien Bien from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Specifically, Vietnam Airlines has two flights from Hanoi to Dien Bien every day. Round-trip fares start at VND2.1 million. Vietjet Air has one flight from Hanoi and one flight from Ho Chi Minh City, with round-trip fares ranging from VND2 million to VND5 million.

Near Dien Bien liberation day, airlines may increase flights, depending on passenger volume or upon request.

Road

The road from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu city is 450 km long. Visitors follow CT08, CT02, QL6 through Hoa Binh province or follow DT87, QL32, QL37 through Hoa Binh and Son La. Travel time is about 10-11 hours depending on traffic conditions.

Tourists from other provinces and cities choose, depending on the direction of travel, also follow the above national and provincial highways.

In Dien Bien Phu city

If you do not have your own vehicle, you should rent a motorbike at the hotel (average 100,000 VND per day per motorbike) for convenient and proactive travel. In addition, you can choose a taxi and note to use the meter. Reputable taxi companies: Mai Linh, Hoa Ban, Him Lam.

Accommodation

The number of visitors to Dien Bien during the 70th anniversary is so large that hotels are always fully booked, especially on weekends. The People's Committee of Dien Bien Phu City and Dien Bien District mobilized 102 households to provide temporary accommodation services to serve tourists in the form of homestays.

Tourists should book rooms in advance because the closer to the holiday, the sooner rooms are sold out. Room prices are also increasing. Currently, motels cost from 500,000 VND to 1.2 million VND. Hotels cost from about 800,000 VND to more than 2 million VND.

Currently, Dien Bien has 205 accommodation establishments, nearly 2,800 rooms with about 5,100 beds. Some accommodation establishments suggested by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Dien Bien Phu City and neighboring areas:

Dien Bien Phu City

Hotels: Muong Thanh, Cong Doan, Hong Ky, Hai Van, Ruby, Pha Din, Bao Chau, A1 Hotel, An Loc, Phuong Nam

Motels: 76, Tuan Minh, 555, Hoa Ban, Thuy Linh, Viet Hoang, Binh Long, May Hong, Thanh Nhan, Thanh Tam, Huyen Anh.

Outlying areas

U Va hot spring resort (Dien Bien district), Hua Pe hot spring resort (Dien Bien district), Thanh Binh hotel (Muong Lay town), Post Office motel, Pha Din motel, Tay Bac hotel, Thuong Nghiep hotel (Tuan Giao district).

Weather

While the Northeast is still quite pleasant, the Northwest, including Dien Bien province, has been hot for many days. The average daily temperature is around 35-36 degrees, hot and stuffy. This temperature is expected to last until the 70th anniversary.

Tourists should bring hats, sunscreen, drinking water and limit moving around or queuing for long periods in the hot sun. Tourists should contact tourist attractions in advance to book tickets, seats or food and drinks.

Historical sites include A1 Hill, General De Castries' bunker, Dien Bien Museum, Martyrs' Cemetery, F Hill (Dien Bien Phu battlefield martyrs' temple) all located in the central area of ​​Dien Bien Phu basin, Muong Thanh field (now the center of Dien Bien Phu city). These places are close to each other so visitors can combine their visits in one day.

The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument is located on D1 Hill, nearly 2 km away from the above-mentioned monuments. This is currently the largest bronze monument in Vietnam. There are two ways to get there: by car to the foot of the monument or by climbing about 320 steps.

Muong Phang, where General Vo Nguyen Giap worked, is more than 20 km from Dien Bien Phu city, visitors must travel by motorbike or car.

A few notes

Each attraction sells tickets at prices ranging from 15,000 VND to 20,000 VND.

There are many restaurants in Dien Bien Phu city, each meal for one person ranges from 50,000 VND to 200,000 VND depending on the dish ordered. Note that the food here is typical of the Northern mountainous region, so many dishes may be difficult to eat.

Independent travelers or small groups should proactively eat outside of peak lunch and dinner times (avoid 11-12pm and 6-7pm) to limit waiting times as these are often meal times for large groups of tourists and tour groups.
