80 new students from four provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh received more than 1.2 billion VND in scholarships, gifts and laptops from sponsors on the afternoon of October 5 at a ceremony in Thanh Hoa.

Crying, not just because of adversity

Sung A Hong lives in the mountainous district of Muong Lat, more than 200km from Thanh Hoa City. His family is poor and has 11 children, so after finishing 10th grade, Hong dropped out of school to help his parents with farming and raising livestock so that his younger siblings could go to school. Three years later, when his younger siblings were studying at the same level as their peers, Hong returned to school and became an excellent student in the province, now a freshman majoring in English at Hong Duc University (Thanh Hoa).

Hong said that if she did not drop out of school, her parents would have a hard time. She was also afraid that her younger sisters would get married early like many other children in the village, which would make the poor even poorer. She was determined to learn English to return to her hometown to help other children learn foreign languages ​​because they had few opportunities to learn foreign languages ​​and access civilization.

Meanwhile, freshman Nguyen Thi Hai did not know who her father was when she was born. At the age of 5, her mother left her with her grandmother to find a new life. Hai grew up in her grandmother's loving arms. But her grandmother also left Hai at the end of 2023 after many years of fighting illness while she was studying for her high school graduation exam. "When my grandmother passed away, my sky collapsed. I felt empty because I thought about the upcoming journey without anyone by my side" - Hai cried.

Listening to her friends’ stories, Quach Thi Luyen, a new student at Hanoi University of Pharmacy, could not hold back her tears. Luyen shared: “I never thought there would be many friends with more difficult circumstances than me. Your determination is the motivation for me to try harder in my studies.”

Motivation for sponsors

At the ceremony, General Director of Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company Ngo Van Dong said that when a person has a loving heart, they will take responsibility. The total cost of awarding 80 scholarships in Thanh Hoa is over 1.2 billion VND sponsored by the “Companion of Farmers” Fund (Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company). This is the third awarding point in the 2024 Support to School Scholarship Program for new students under the 592nd “For Tomorrow’s Development” program of Tuoi Tre Newspaper.

Each scholarship is worth 15 million VND, of which two special scholarships (50 million VND/for four years) are reserved for two new students Sung A Hong and Nguyen Thi Hai with especially difficult circumstances.

Tuoi Tre Newspaper's 2024 Support to School Scholarship Program is for more than 1,100 new students from disadvantaged backgrounds nationwide with a total estimated cost of over 20 billion VND.
