Things Apple Needs to Improve on the iPhone

Note that since Apple now offers many different iPhone models, these recommendations only apply to certain iPhone models.

iPhone is good but still needs a lot of improvement

Refresh rate on base model

If you're shopping for an Android phone, you'll find plenty of models with 90Hz or 120Hz displays (or even higher in some cases). That's true even if you're looking at one of the budget phones like the Galaxy A54.

But on iOS, users only get a 120Hz refresh rate if they opt for the expensive Pro model. Even the more recent, expensive iPhones like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus only have a 60Hz refresh rate. This is such a basic and outdated spec in 2024 that it’s hard to believe Apple is still using it. This partly explains why buyers are increasingly opting for the Pro iPhone. All recent signs point to the iPhone 16 being stuck at 60Hz again.

Telephoto camera

While the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a good 5x telephoto camera, it still doesn't match some phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra (10x) or the Sony Xperia 1 VI (7.1x). In fact, the Xperia 1 VI is incredibly impressive because it can move between multiple zoom levels with just one lens.

However, with the iPhone, users only get one level of telephoto zoom, and the digital zoom is not as good as some other phones. So if you try to zoom beyond 5x, the quality will quickly decrease. This is less convincing when compared to the top models from Samsung or even Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo…

Charging speed

The OnePlus 12 can charge up to 100W, the Xiaomi 14 Pro can charge up to 120W, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra can charge at 45W. But with the iPhone 15, the official number is that it can't go beyond 20W. As a result, while these phones also have smaller batteries than most comparable Android handsets, they charge slower, and the same is true for wireless charging - which the iPhone 15 series can only do at a maximum of 15W.

Apple has shown no interest in offering faster charging, but falling so far behind may be a change the company needs to make.

Battery capacity

Another issue with iPhone batteries is capacity, as Apple has always put smaller batteries in its phones than similarly sized Android phones. The largest iPhone battery is 4,441mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but that's still much smaller than the standard 5,000mAh found on the best Android phones. Some Android phones have even larger batteries, reaching 6,000mAh or more in some cases.

Of course, users don't need a 6,000 mAh battery on an iPhone, but there's no reason why Apple couldn't increase the capacity to around 5,000 mAh in the Pro Max and Plus models, and at least 4,000 mAh for the Pro and standard models (which are currently below 3,500 mAh).

It might make the phone a little heavier and thicker, but it's arguably a fair price to pay for a phone with a two-day battery life. Since iPhones tend to be good at battery life, the increased battery capacity would allow them to compete.

Number of lenses

While Samsung’s flagship phones have long had four lenses on the back, Apple has stuck with three, or even just two, on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. These are disappointing numbers, to say the least. In the case of two lenses, it lacks a telephoto lens — something that’s really needed on expensive phones.

Moving to three lenses including wide angle, ultra wide angle and telephoto will bring advanced photography level to iPhone users.
