Lethargy, being easily irritated with loved ones, being cheerful during the day but gloomy in the evening... can be signs of abnormal psychology, and should not be taken lightly.
Ms. LHNM (19 years old, living in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that more than a year ago, she had symptoms of sleeping more than usual and often getting angry with family members. “I noticed that I became sensitive, easily lost control of my emotions, had extreme thoughts and negatively affected people around me at that time. Currently, although my psychological condition has improved, I still easily panic and have prolonged insomnia.”
Similarly, Ms. LNKN (21 years old, living in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that she also had many signs of irritability with relatives more than 4 years ago. “In addition to the above symptoms, during that time I was often tired, had sleep disorders, had difficulty concentrating, was anxious, easily emotional, felt pessimistic and hopeless, leading to many psychological and physical weaknesses. These states seemed to be worse in the evening and at night.”
Ms. LNKN (22 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) once had a period of emotional instability and severe sleep deprivation.
Symptoms of the disorder
According to Master - Specialist Doctor 1 Nguyen Trung Nghia, Deputy Director of Vinmec Times City Integrated Mental Health Care Center, being irritable with relatives but being pleasant and gentle with outsiders is a common phenomenon in society.
“When we are in an environment where our emotions can lead to consequences, such as at school or at work, we tend to suppress and endure them. When we are at home, where we are with family members, we let our emotions go because we assume they will never abandon us,” explains Dr. Trung Nghia.
According to Dr. Trung Nghia, depression has many different forms, one of which is a condition in which the patient goes through two phases: Depression or mania (excessive happiness and excitement). “A person experiencing two opposing states of depression and mania is called bipolar disorder. In the manic state, the patient may sleep very little, only 1-2 hours/day and work very productively. This often lasts from half a day to a whole week, which is when people need to consider their illness because the manic phase is often very difficult to treat.”
Sleeping too much for a long time is sometimes also a manifestation of depression and disorders.
In addition, Master - Doctor Do Quoc Quynh Nhu, Psychosomatic Therapy Clinic, Examination Department, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that some of the following disorders can also lead to sleep problems, irritability and emotional instability.
Atypical depressive disorder : The patient tends to sleep a lot, is irritable and moody when alone or when there is no social activity but the mood improves when there is positive interaction with outsiders.
Social Anxiety Disorder : The person may be able to control and be cheerful when meeting strangers because of the desire to make a good impression. The evening can also be a time when anxiety levels increase, leading to a more gloomy feeling.
Emotional dysregulation : Causes sudden changes in mood and behavior, including feeling irritable, easily angered, and difficulty controlling emotions.
Circadian rhythm disorder : People with a circadian rhythm that is out of sync (delayed sleep onset syndrome) may have difficulty maintaining stable energy levels throughout the day. They may be full of energy in the morning and during the day, but by the evening, because their circadian rhythms are not properly adjusted, they may feel sluggish and tired, leading to mood swings.
