Phu Quy is an outpost island in the East Sea of Binh Thuan province and was honored to welcome General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to visit and work in July 2014. 10 years have passed, but the image of the General Secretary with his white hair, kind and gentle smile and kind greetings is still intact in the minds of the islanders. Remembering the General Secretary's advice, the Party Committee, government and people of Phu Quy island district have united as one, contributing to building their homeland to become more and more prosperous and beautiful.
1. In the last days of July, it was drizzling, memories of the General Secretary who was close to the people, of the warm and affectionate visit and work in Phu Quy island district were recalled by the cadres and people here with a respectful nostalgia.
Ms. Ngo Thi Thai - Deputy Head of the Economic - Social Committee of the People's Council of Phu Quy island district choked up as she looked at the photo taken with the General Secretary 10 years ago through her phone. She recalled that at that time she was the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Thanh commune - the commune that the General Secretary directly visited when he came to the island district. "That day, he wore a light brown shirt, without a tie. Although I had only met him for a short time, I felt his closeness and love for the people. The most impressive thing was when he gave me a gift, shook my hand and asked me how I was. I bowed my head to thank him, and he responded with a very gentle smile, which made me very emotional. Hearing the news of his death, the image of that day kept appearing in my memory. Thinking about it makes my tears flow," Ms. Thai emotionally said.
It has been 10 years, but Mr. Le Hong Loi - Permanent Deputy Secretary of Phu Quy island district still cannot forget the memories when the General Secretary came to Phu Quy. "Uncle Ho's visit to Phu Quy left behind good feelings for the local people. Hearing the news of his passing, the islanders were very moved, sad and mourned him - the person who devoted his feelings and time to caring for the remote island district", Mr. Loi said.
Mr. Loi recounted: Tam Thanh commune is a key economic exchange center of the island district. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong spent time directly discussing with cadres and people about the organization and activities of fishermen; about fishing grounds, services, processing, seafood consumption; about education, fresh water supply... General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong shared the difficulties that cadres and people of Tam Thanh commune in particular, Phu Quy district in general, are facing due to being far from the mainland, often affected by the weather, difficulties in fishing grounds...
“In the meeting that day, the General Secretary hoped that Tam Thanh commune as well as Phu Quy island district would continue to do well in fishing, organize a good fishing fleet, and at the same time develop aquaculture, linking production with seafood processing, purchasing, and consumption services. The General Secretary emphasized: Offshore fishing is the mainstay and tradition of the island district. Combining with on-site farming, combining with economic development of the island, exploiting all potential and strengths. But at the same time, with production, we must think about the task of protecting the Fatherland, maintaining security, order, and social safety in the inland but also preserving independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Mr. Loi reiterated the General Secretary’s instructions.
Mr. Loi also said that regarding Party building work, the General Secretary requested the Party Committee of Tam Thanh commune in general and Phu Quy island district in particular to focus on building a clean and strong Party organization, a good government system, transparent administrative procedures, and fighting against embezzlement, harassment, and waste.
2. 10 years after the advice of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Phu Quy today has put on a new coat. That is, the infrastructure in Phu Quy has been invested in and completed, not only creating a spacious appearance for the island district but also meeting the needs of production development and improving people's lives. By the end of 2023, Phu Quy had exploited the potential of the marine economy with many positive advantages. Over 36 thousand tons of seafood were exploited during the year, reaching more than 110% of the plan; attracting about 225 thousand visitors, an increase of more than 72 thousand over the same period in 2022. The economy grew steadily, the budget revenue reached more than 25 billion VND, reaching over 107% of the assigned plan; social security work was ensured: about 75% of households used clean water, 99% of households used hygienic water; 100% of households had electricity for lighting. In addition, national defense and security work is ensured, especially the Party Committee and the authorities pay attention to seriously implementing propaganda for fishermen to exploit aquatic and marine products legally and effectively. In 2023, Phu Quy island district did not detect fishing vessels violating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing)... Regarding the work of Party building and building a clean and strong political system, Phu Quy pays special attention to the work of developing Party members. Every year, the district Party Committee always seeks to innovate, improve the capacity and fighting strength of grassroots Party organizations and the operation of the apparatus of agencies and mass organizations, focusing on doing a good job of building a clean and strong Party, government and mass organizations.
“The General Secretary’s advice and guidance for Phu Quy 10 years ago has always been a driving force for the Party Committee, government and people of Phu Quy island district to unite, join hands, join hearts, study and learn, so that from there they can continue to break through and build a rich, beautiful and civilized homeland,” Mr. Loi affirmed.
