Many universities offer scholarships and tuition reductions to students in flood-affected areas

Ho Chi Minh City Open University said it will award more than 300 scholarships worth a total of VND1 billion to students in provinces affected by storm No. 3 and floods.

Professor Nguyen Minh Ha, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, said that according to statistics, the school has more than 300 students currently studying with registered residence in the northern provinces and cities affected by storm Yagi and floods.

In order to share, encourage and motivate students to overcome difficulties and continue their studies, the school awarded more than 300 scholarships worth a total of 1 billion VND to students in the provinces and cities of the Northern region.

In addition, the school will continue to monitor and take necessary material and spiritual support measures to ensure that students are not interrupted in their studies due to objective factors such as natural disasters and floods.

The scholarship program is aimed at students studying at the school, in the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 courses, especially those who are in difficult circumstances due to natural disasters and have permanent residence in the northern provinces and cities - areas that suffered heavy damage after storm Yagi including: Hanoi, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) has launched the "Support Scholarship" and "Tuition Payment Extension" programs to support students in the northern provinces affected by storm No. 3 in 2024.

Accordingly, UEH will award 100 scholarships, each worth VND 10,000,000 to disadvantaged students of courses 47, 48, 49 and 50 with permanent residence in 26 northern localities directly affected by storm No. 3 in 2024, including: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, Son La, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Ha Nam, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc and Thanh Hoa.

In addition, to support all students and families in the 26 provinces and cities above to reduce financial pressure during the current difficult time, UEH also extended the tuition payment deadline for the first semester of 2025 to January 15, 2025.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade is collecting information on the situation of students whose families and relatives were affected or suffered damage due to Typhoon Yagi. Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, said that following the direction of the Board of Directors of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, the Student Affairs Department and the Education Inspectorate are conducting a quick survey on the situation of students whose families and relatives were affected or suffered damage due to Typhoon Yagi, the survey will be conducted from September 12 to September 18.

After this period, based on the survey results, the Student Affairs Department and the Education Inspectorate will propose to the school leaders a policy to support students in cases where their families and relatives suffer serious damage, affecting their economy and life.

According to a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry , students from provinces and cities affected by storm Yagi studying at the school will have their tuition fees exempted, reduced, or deferred depending on each specific case.

On September 16, the Ministry of Education and Training sent a dispatch to universities and colleges of education to implement support measures for students affected by storm No. 3. In this dispatch, the Ministry of Education and Training stated that in recent times, many localities across the country, especially the northern provinces, have suffered heavy losses in property and lives due to storm No. 3, including students and their families...

To continue supporting students affected by floods to stabilize their studies soon, the Ministry of Education and Training recommends that universities and pedagogical colleges prioritize allocating resources to exempt and reduce tuition fees and provide financial support suitable to each student's circumstances.

According to the report data of 18/26 provinces and centrally-run cities sent to the Ministry of Education and Training, as of September 16, the total damage to facilities and teaching equipment is estimated at: 1,260 billion VND (One thousand two hundred and sixty billion VND); 41,564 sets of textbooks were damaged.
