(CLO) Two popular media platforms, The Sun and Reddit, are both facing a decline in traffic due to changes in Google's search algorithm.

The Sun, a British newspaper, saw a significant decline in readership by the end of 2024, losing half of its readership.

In parent company News Corp's latest earnings report, CFO Lavanya Chandrashekar blamed the decline largely on "industry headwinds related to search algorithms," particularly changes by Google.

Glenn Gabe, an SEO consultant, also shared that many websites, including The Sun, have faced a major drop in visibility on Google over the past few years.

Recently, in September 2024, Google announced some important changes to its search algorithm. In particular, Google clarified some of the wording in its spam policy on Google Search, focusing more on web spam and related tactics.

However, the Sun said it was not overly concerned with traffic figures, instead focusing on deepening engagement with its readers, highlighting a shift towards increased watch time on YouTube as a key metric.

Meanwhile, Reddit also faced a similar situation when it missed its expectations for daily visitors in the fourth quarter of 2024. Although the company recorded a 39% growth in this traffic, reaching 101.7 million users, it was still lower than the 103.3 million estimated by analysts.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Google's algorithm change affected searches by users who weren't logged into the platform, but search traffic recovered in the first quarter of 2025.
