On April 11, Dr. Nguyen Hong Loi, Director of the Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Hue Central Hospital), said that the unit is coordinating with the Interplast Volunteer Surgery Group to organize free screening and surgery for children with cleft lip and palate. To date, more than 30 children nationwide have been successfully operated on.
Foreign doctors screen children with cleft lip
The surgery program was launched on April 8, lasting for 10 days, by a team of doctors from Hue Central Hospital and 11 members of the Interplast Volunteer Surgery Team including experts, doctors, dental - maxillofacial - facial technicians, anesthesiologists and resuscitation specialists from Germany, Russia, Spain, Australia...
The main subjects receiving free surgery are children with congenital cleft lip and palate defects who have not had surgery (or have had surgery and now need to repair the scar, close the palatal opening) and some cases with bad scars after previous burns, facial injuries, etc. Hundreds of children across the country have registered for this surgery.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Loi said that in order for the deformities to be corrected and the children's smiles to be restored, the treatment will have to be long-term, not only requiring large costs but also requiring coordination between the family and pediatricians, plastic surgeons, speech therapists, etc.
As of April 11, doctors have successfully performed surgery on 30 children.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Loi, in Vietnam, the rate of children with this defect is twice as high as in many other countries, causing them to lack confidence in communication. Up to now, the free surgery program for children with congenital defects of cleft lip and palate has entered its 6th year, becoming an annual activity, helping hundreds of children overcome their inferiority complex.
This surgical cooperation program is also an opportunity for foreign doctors to transfer the latest modern techniques to the medical team of Hue Central Hospital in terms of surgical expertise and anesthesia and resuscitation.
It is expected that by April 18, about 80 children will have surgery to improve their appearance.
