School says staff fault for not sharing equally

VTC NewsVTC News16/10/2023

Parents of children studying at Yen Nghia Secondary School reported that their children’s school meals cost 32,000 VND but the food was only a few dishes, not enough to satisfy their hunger. One day, the rice tray only had a few vegetables, a piece of ham and a few pieces of fish cake. Another day, the meal also only had a few potatoes, 3-4 small pieces of fried fish and pork instead of the ham.

After that, parents suddenly checked the boarding meals and were surprised to see that the food input on October 11 was not enough for 500 boarding students/day.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Trinh, the school's principal, said that the school had discussed with the company that supplies and processes the meals for boarding students. The company sent people to monitor the kitchen and investigate the cause.

The school also wishes to learn from experience in inspection and supervision and will continue to work with the Parents' Representative Board to inspect and supervise to ensure that students' daily meals are of sufficient quantity, nutrition, and health.

Staff error?

Regarding the incident, at noon on October 16, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong district said that on October 12, 2023, the unit received feedback from parents of Yen Nghia Secondary School about the boarding meals of students at the school. The Department of Education and Training coordinated with the Ha Dong District Medical Center and Yen Nghia Ward Medical Station to conduct a surprise inspection to verify the information.

The results recorded by the inspection team at the time of inspection showed that the meals reported were on the school's menu.

After receiving information from parents, the school and parents' representatives worked with Hoa Sua Company, the food supplier and food processor for students. The company confirmed that on that day, because the food distributors were not distributing the meals evenly, some food trays had little food (because the number of meals in a session was about 500, but the time to distribute was within 30 minutes to ensure hot food and there were only a few employees distributing, so the meals were not even).

“The food distribution staff admitted their mistakes, the company organized a review and acknowledged the shortcomings and assigned additional staff to supervise the kitchen. The school admitted its mistakes and has not yet arranged staff to supervise the food distribution process. The school requested the company to learn from its mistakes and continue to work with the school to ensure meals for students,” the report of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong district stated.

Yen Nghia Secondary School also informed that the school signed a contract with Hoa Sua Food Processing and Trading Company Limited to provide boarding meals for students with a quantity of about 500 meals/day.

The price of a meal is 32,000 VND, but that includes 8% VAT, labor, fuel, processed food, and depreciation of cooking facilities. The daily menu is selected and approved by the school and parents, and is made public.

Regarding the supervision of the school's canteen, every day there are staff and representatives of parents to check the stages and processes of food processing in the canteen to ensure compliance with regulations. The parents' representative board has a schedule of regular and surprise inspections of the canteen.

Require schools to learn from experience

The inspection team requested the school to seriously learn from experience in the management, direction and supervision of boarding meals. Absolutely do not let this situation happen. Regularly listen to the opinions of parents and assign more staff and representatives of parents to closely monitor the processes of receiving, processing, and dividing food, etc. to ensure the quality of boarding meals for students.

At the same time, it is recommended that the school continue to hold meetings between three parties: school representatives, parents' representatives, and Hoa Sua Company to have a common commitment and consensus. The parents' representatives continue to send representatives to participate and coordinate with the school to monitor the origin, quality, and price of food from suppliers.

The Department of Education and Training will coordinate with relevant agencies to continue to strengthen inspection of boarding activities throughout the district.

The leader of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong district also added that this afternoon (October 16), the unit will organize a conference of principals of the whole district to thoroughly grasp the work of ensuring food safety and quality of school meals to rectify management and direction work.
