On the first day of the 2023 National Athletics Championship, as expected, runner Nguyen Thi Oanh of Bac Giang team outperformed her opponents, winning the gold medal in the women's 1,500m event with a time of 4 minutes 21 seconds 07. The silver medal went to Bui Thi Ngan (Nam Dinh, 4 minutes 26 seconds 15) and Ngo Thi Khanh Ny (Thai Binh), with a time of 4 minutes 32 seconds 29, received the bronze medal.
Notably, Nguyen Thi Oanh's achievement of 4 minutes 21 seconds 07 far exceeded the 4 minutes 24 seconds 19 she achieved at the 19th Asian Games last month (4 minutes 24 seconds 19), but was still lower than her gold medal achievement at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia in May.
Nguyen Thi Oanh has no rivals in the domestic arena.
After winning the "opening" gold medal in the 1,500m event, Nguyen Thi Oanh also participated in 3 other events: 3,000m obstacle course, 5,000m and 10,000m.
On the first day of competition, a new national record was set in the women's shot put event. Athlete Kim Thi Huyen (Tra Vinh) achieved a score of 15m27 (the old record was 14m96).
In the long jump event, veteran athlete Bui Thi Thu Thao (Hanoi) won silver with a result of 6m30. The gold medal was won by Hoang Thanh Giang (Hai Phong, 6m39), and the bronze medal was won by Tran Thi Loan (Da Nang, 6m23).
In the women's pole vault final, Nguyen Pham Hoai Yen (Da Nang) won the gold medal with a score of 3m80. The silver medal went to Dang Nguyen To Trinh (Da Nang) with a score of 3m30, and the bronze medal went to Truong Thi Thu (Thanh Hoa) with a score of 3m20.

The 2023 National Athletics Championship takes place from October 24-28 with more than 400 athletes from 53 units, competing in 50 events. This is the last important tournament of Vietnamese athletics this year.
The tournament took place at the National Military Training Center 4 (Mieu Mon, Hanoi), instead of at My Dinh National Stadium due to funding issues.
