Young people now love milk tea, what will happen to traditional tea?

Is modern tea the rival of traditional tea? Are young people addicted to milk tea causing traditional tea to fade away?... These are the questions raised in the discussion Traditional tea preparations and modern tea.

Researchers and businesses present at the seminar held at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology on November 26 all affirmed that modern tea developed from traditional tea.

Young people are now loving modern tea but as a full circle, they will approach and love traditional tea again.

I can't drink all the Vietnamese teas in a month.

Vietnam is one of the cradles of tea in the world . Mr. Nguyen Le Uyen Vien - a tea culture researcher, tea and tea utensils collector - gave some interesting information that Vietnam has 35 tea growing regions in the country. Among them are many famous tea places.

There are currently 20 - 30 types of Vietnamese tea. If you drink one type every day, it will take a month to finish all the types of tea.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan - a traditional Vietnamese tea artisan - said that the traditional way of drinking tea by crushing fresh leaves and pouring hot water into a pot with a few slices of ginger is still applied from urban to rural areas.

This is like a precious spiritual value that our ancestors passed down to the next generation. Other countries do not drink like that.

Drinking tea is good for your health. Not only that, tea is surpassing coffee to become a favorite drink all over the world, including Vietnam.

In recent times, in Ho Chi Minh City, a series of tea shops from high-end to popular ones have blossomed on the streets and small alleys, which is the clearest proof.

Many new types of tea and ways of drinking tea such as milk tea and fruit tea have been introduced to Vietnam and have been warmly welcomed by young people.

Develop together

Faced with concerns about whether traditional Vietnamese tea, which has existed for thousands of years, will be affected and lose its strength when the wave of modern tea comes in, Mr. Tuan affirmed:

"Traditional tea and modern tea are not opposed to each other. Young people are interested in modern tea. From modern tea, you learn carefully and return to traditional tea. Traditional tea and modern tea always develop together. You are happy with any tea."

Researcher Uyen Vien agrees, saying this is normal: "Cuisine always has traditional dishes and imported dishes to create diversity. The modern tea that young people love also creates that richness."

He also noted that: "A cup of milk tea or fruit tea is quite expensive. Meanwhile, using traditional tea is quite cheap.

Besides, the practice of making and drinking tea still exists today because it has many spiritual meanings. This helps traditional tea to exist forever.

Mr. Dang Quoc Hung, director of a famous tea shop chain in Ho Chi Minh City, said that his company's tea shop chain uses 100% Vietnamese tea produced by the company itself.

Modern tea brewing, no matter what the recipe, must bring out the real tea aroma. This is the secret to making the shop’s tea products popular. Therefore, only with traditional tea can there be modern tea.

Young Koreans also prefer tea to coffee.

According to Hankook Ilbo, in Korea, a new tea drinking trend is also emerging, especially among people in their 20s and 30s. They are increasingly choosing tea for its health benefits and novelty.

"When I started teaching tea classes 10 years ago, most of the students were in their 50s and 60s. Now, most are from the 90s generation," said tea master Yang Young Min, director of the Asian Tea Culture Research Institute.

Another factor driving the development of tea culture is the younger generation's pursuit of "healthy pleasures", the trend of maintaining health in an enjoyable way.

Many tea shops now offer “tea therapy,” explaining the specific health benefits of each tea, such as reducing fatigue, improving digestion, and managing water retention.

While a cup of coffee can contain 10 to 20 grams of caffeine, tea typically has only 1 to 2 grams, Yang says. Coffee is like fast food, but tea is more like slow food. Tea has a calming effect that is different from the stimulating effect of coffee.
