"Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi", "Dong Khanh Du Dia Chi" and many foreign notes about Quang Nam all recorded the intelligence, diligence and hard work of Quang people.
"Happy to do good deeds, enthusiastic about public work"
From patriotism, Quang people have a spirit of dedication. When Quang people devote themselves to the great cause, for the country and the people, they are often willing to accept dangers, even their lives, such as: Hoang Dieu, Tran Quy Cap, Tran Cao Van, Thai Phien, Phan Thanh Tai, Ong Ich Khiem, Ong Ich Duong... This also explains why Quang people have the most heroic Vietnamese mothers and martyrs in the whole country...
The spirit of joy in doing good deeds and enthusiasm for public affairs is clearly shown in Pham Phu Thu's request to King Tu Duc to allow officials from Quang Nam to return to their hometowns to fight the French with the people (1858-1860).
Since then, a series of Quang Nam officials suddenly "reported illness" and "resigned" to return to their hometowns to secretly participate in the Can Vuong movement, such as Tran Van Du and Do Dang Tuyen...
In the fight against foreign invaders and in the construction of the country, tens of thousands of Quang Nam youth volunteered to go to the battlefield to kill the enemy, “vowing to die for the survival of the Fatherland”, typically the “Volunteer Youth Escape - Nguyen Van Troi” movement. In 1965 alone, up to 5,100 young people secretly went to the base. In addition, Quang Nam people contributed 52kg of gold to the “Golden Week” movement (1946) launched by Uncle Ho. Tens of thousands of young people participated in the movement to make “Phu Ninh my dam longer” at the “Phu Ninh great irrigation project”…

The scholar has a strong character, speaks boldly, is hot-tempered and argumentative.
Because of their spirit of chivalry and indomitability, Quang Nam people are often willing to rush into danger to support the king and help the country.
The spirit of "zealousness in public affairs", "toughness", and "boldness" shows that Quang people - especially the intellectual class - seem to be "fearless" - in fact, they dare to speak their minds to superiors and the powerful.
The “argumentative” character is “not easily accepting one-sided imposition, always respecting the reality of life and respecting independence in thought” (Nguyen Ngoc - “Understanding the people of Quang”). Perhaps because of that character, for hundreds of years, the number of Quang people in the “four pillars of the imperial court” can be counted on one hand!
The “argumentative” nature of the Quang people, most clearly comes from the Nguyen kings’ perspective on governance. They lacked confidence in the “literati and people of Quang land”, suspecting that the Quang Nam people had cooperated with the “puppet dynasty” Quang Trung for nearly 25 years and were “guilty” of being involved in letting the Crown Prince Nguyen Phuc Duong be captured by Tay Son in O Gia (in Dai Loc district) and killed by Nguyen Hue in Vinh Long.
Therefore, from King Gia Long to Tu Duc, officials of Quang origin were all “assigned” to guard places with dangerous forests and waters, thousands of miles of dangerous terrain to “prevent further damage”. If they wanted to survive, they had to “argue to the end” every time they were falsely accused or framed!
The "miracle" of Quang's personality
Quang people have the advantage of daring to speak frankly, to tell the truth, to dare to do and to have initiative and innovation. For that reason, their contributions have entered the history of the nation with many different levels.
They are strong-willed, have clear public and private interests, hate flattery and sycophancy, and immediately start doing or fully support anything that is beneficial to the country and the people. Therefore, they often do not pay due attention to principles, easily make mistakes in "royal law", and are easily used by opponents to "impeach" (accuse) the court.
However, in dangerous situations, especially when faced with foreign invasion, if used at the right time, Quang people often handle it very decisively and effectively, typically like Ong Ich Khiem, Huynh Thuc Khang...
The Quang intellectual class, especially those who “work as mandarins and enjoy the country’s benefits” often have extensive, profound knowledge and are sensitive to current events. They quickly discover policy shortcomings and mistakes of their superiors and are ready to “argue” or find other ways to avoid harming the people and the country.
Mr. Ich Khiem dared to condemn the court for "hiring Chinese when there were enemies". Minister Pham Phu Thu advised King Tu Duc to the point of being stripped of all his titles and sent to work on irrigation works. Phan Chau Trinh pointed out "seven reasons" that required King Khai Dinh to be executed.
More recently, comrade Vo Chi Cong knew how to seize the opportunity to launch the campaign “commune liberates commune, district liberates district, province liberates province” to end the war in his homeland. Ho Nghinh cleverly “avoided” the policy of “eliminating superstition” to preserve My Son and Hoi An ancient town…
Later, the spirit of "zealousness for public work", daring to think, daring to do created the industrial centers of Chu Lai, Tam Ky, Dien Ngoc; created a "livable" Da Nang... That was truly a miracle of the "Quang character".
More than ever, perhaps, at this time, Quang people need to promote the traditions of "hardworking farmers", "hardworking students", "zealous in public work", "happy to do good deeds", "bold speech" of each citizen...
