GĐXH - While sleeping, Mrs. H suddenly heard a rustling sound and felt a sharp pain deep inside her ear. The foreign object caused the patient to ache and itch, unable to eat or sleep.
On October 28, information from Medlatec General Hospital said that recently, doctors at this unit received and successfully treated a case of a cockroach crawling into the ear, causing pain.
Accordingly, the patient is Mrs. VTH, 54 years old (in Ba Dinh, Hanoi ). According to the patient, she often has the habit of spreading a mattress on the floor to sleep. A few days ago, while sleeping, the patient suddenly heard a rustling sound and felt a sharp pain deep inside her ear.

The foreign object caused the patient to have pain, itching, and could not eat or sleep. The patient went to a clinic near his home for a check-up and discovered a cockroach stuck deep into the skin of his ear canal. Because the process of removing the cockroach at the clinic was difficult, the patient continued to Medlatec General Hospital to have the cockroach removed.
Here, the doctors skillfully removed the cockroach from the patient's ear safely. The patient's ear canal did not bleed and the eardrum was not affected.
According to doctors, cockroaches are dark brown or black-brown, wingless insects that move quickly by crawling. Cockroaches often seek shelter at night in cracks in cabinets, drains and dark corners of the house.
Cockroaches have small spines on their legs that can scratch and damage the skin of the ear canal. If they try to find their way out, or if the patient tries to remove them incorrectly, it can lead to damage to the eardrum.
In addition, cockroaches carry many bacteria and pathogens. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cockroaches can carry up to 32 types of bacteria that cause diseases such as diarrhea, gastroenteritis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections and some other dangerous diseases.
Be careful when insects get into your ears.
Dr. Nguyen Phuong Dung, ENT specialist, Medlatec General Hospital, said that insects entering the ear can cause unwanted effects and should not be taken lightly. When detecting sharp pain in the ear, hearing strange sounds in the ear, suspecting that an insect has entered the ear, the patient should go to a medical facility with an ENT specialist as soon as possible. The doctor will remove the insect as well as treat the damage caused by the insect.

This expert noted that people should avoid using tools to pick their ears, and should not put medicine or hydrogen peroxide in their ears because it could accidentally push the foreign object deeper. Insects struggling can also damage the lining of the ear canal.
In addition, people should avoid using folk remedies when insects crawl into their ears. Word-of-mouth methods such as heating leaves, steaming, etc. are not only ineffective but also scare insects away, causing them to run deeper.
Dr. Dung added that after removing the insect from the ear, it is necessary to pay attention to cleaning the ear and regularly applying medicine to prevent infection. Along with that, pay attention to preventive measures to prevent insects from entering the ear such as: Regularly cleaning the living space, paying attention to arranging furniture neatly and tidily to avoid hiding insects.
Do not sleep on the ground because damp ground is not safe from insects that can pass through and accidentally crawl into the ear. At the same time, regularly wash blankets and pillowcases to avoid attracting insects.
For young children, pay attention to personal hygiene, change into clean clothes, especially after feeding to limit attracting insects. In addition, adults should let children play in clean, cool places, away from places with insects.
