Many people shared that they have not been able to return home for Tet for 2-3 years because they do not have money to buy train or bus tickets.
On the morning of January 20, joining the crowd of people coming to the Student Cultural House (District 1) to board the spring bus to return home for Tet, Ms. Tuyet Nhung (from Binh Dinh) and her group of friends were moved to tears, following all the activities of the program.
2,000 students and disadvantaged workers gathered at the Youth Cultural House to board buses to return home for Tet.
Ms. Nhung said that she has been selling lottery tickets in Ho Chi Minh City to earn money to support her children's education for about 10 years. In recent years, business has been difficult and sluggish; each lottery ticket sold only brings in a profit of 1,000 VND, while the number of customers has decreased, and they are often cheated and have their lottery tickets snatched.
About a month ago, while selling to a stranger, this person held her hand and said something unclear. After that, Mrs. Nhung was dazed, took out all the money in her pocket and gave it to them. When she woke up, the 5.8 million VND had gone with the other person.
"That's the amount of money I had to save for the whole year, both as capital to buy lottery tickets to sell and as money to prepare for Tet this year for my family. Having lost all the money, I had to pay the agent and pay in installments every day to have money to buy lottery tickets to sell. As for Tet shopping, it's all gone, nothing left," said Ms. Nhung.
Ms. Tuyen Nhung (second from left) and Ms. Ai Phi (in black) are emotional when they are about to go home.
According to Ms. Nhung, if she did not receive a free ticket home, she would not be able to return home. Therefore, when she was about to board the free bus to return home, she could not help but be moved, her eyes filled with tears.
"I'm very happy, I only have one chance to come home to my children once a year, so I try my best. Coming home to reunite with my family is like having Tet," Ms. Nhung shared.
Similarly, Ms. Ai Phi (74 years old, from Quang Ngai) also looks forward to the moment the car rolls to return to her hometown. She said that despite her old age and difficult family circumstances, she still tries to stay in Ho Chi Minh City to work hard and earn money to help her son raise his grandchildren who are studying at university.
"The lottery agent rented us a house to stay in, and we only had to pay 10,000 VND per day. Even though we live in a dormitory with 14-15 people in each room, we were able to save money to send to our children and grandchildren. There is nothing happier than being given free tickets to go home during Tet," said Ms. Phi.
Students eagerly return home on the spring bus.
Not only poor workers were given free tickets to return home, many students from colleges and universities in the city also received tickets of love to return home for Tet.
The Phung, a first-year student at Dai Viet College, said that her father passed away about three years ago, leaving her mother to raise her three siblings alone. "This is a huge burden for my mother, because her income only depends on small businesses in the countryside," Phung said.
Therefore, when she was given a ticket to go home for Tet, Phung was very happy and excited. For her, this is a very meaningful ticket, helping her family reduce some of the expenses; helping the whole family reunite during Tet.
This morning, 2,000 students and workers in difficult circumstances in the Central and Central Highlands provinces officially boarded the bus to return home to celebrate Tet on the spring bus. In addition to free tickets, each student and worker also received a gift worth 700,000 VND. This program is organized by the City Youth Union, the City Student Association, the Ho Chi Minh City Student Support Center in coordination with a number of units.
