Mr. Huang, CEO of the world's most valuable chip company, gave a speech to new graduates of National Taiwan University on May 27, where he said AI will change the business landscape and all jobs.
“Companies that are agile will leverage AI and strengthen their position. The rest will be wiped out. While some worry about AI taking over their jobs, the reality is that they will lose their jobs to people who understand AI,” Huang said.
According to Mr. Huang, AI will become a partner to increase employee performance in many industries, creating jobs that never existed while making others disappear.
Nvidia’s chips are the gold standard for training AI models like the technology behind the ChatGPT chatbot. The company has benefited greatly from the AI race among tech companies. Unlike other leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Huang has not issued any warnings about AI. He simply said that students should create something new in the AI era if they don’t want to be left behind.
“In 40 years, we have created PCs, the Internet, mobile, the cloud, and now AI. What are you going to create? Whatever it is, run, don’t walk,” he advised graduates.
Today (May 29), in Taiwan, Mr. Huang revealed a series of new products and services of Nvidia related to AI. They include new robot systems, advertising services, network technology, most importantly, the AI supercomputer platform called DGX GH200. It will help technology companies create competitors of ChatGPT. Microsoft, Meta, Google are expected to be the first customers.
The announcements underscore Nvidia’s shift from a maker of computer graphics chips to AI. Last week, he forecast second-quarter revenue that beat analysts’ expectations by $4 billion, driven by demand for data center chips. The news sent Nvidia’s stock to a record high and could see it reach a $1 trillion valuation. If realized, Nvidia would be the first chipmaker to do so.
In his presentation, Mr. Huang argued that the industry’s traditional architecture is no longer evolving fast enough to keep up with complex computing tasks. To realize the full potential of AI, customers are increasingly using graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerated computing.
“We are at the turning point of a new era of computing,” the head of Nvidia asserted.
He also demonstrated the incredible power of generative AI: turning input text into different types of output media. For example, he asked the AI to suggest a playlist to match his morning mood, or gave it a snippet of song lyrics to turn into a pop tune. “Everyone is a creator,” he said.
