“Indeed, a lot has been said recently about the role of nuclear weapons in Russia's foreign policy. I would like to remind you that the conditions under which we can use nuclear weapons are set out in the doctrinal documents. It is important to understand them: the policy of the Russian state in the sphere of nuclear deterrence is purely defensive,” the Russian Foreign Minister said in an interview.

Mr. Lavrov also affirmed that Russia possesses nuclear weapons in order to maintain the potential of its nuclear forces at the minimum level necessary to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to deter aggression against Russia and its allies.
