Paradox: Many schools have high international rankings but university admissions are difficult

High international ranking

Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has announced the results of university admissions in 2023. Schools have also announced their admission scores. However, it is easy to see that many universities are highly ranked by international educational organizations but their enrollment is not as expected.

Accordingly, in the past few years, Ton Duc Thang University, Phenikaa University, and Duy Tan University have always been highly rated in international rankings.

Accordingly, in 2022, Ton Duc Thang University was ranked 1,001 - 1,200 in the QS WUR 2022 rankings. With this result, Ton Duc Thang University is one of the 4 highly rated universities in Vietnam.

The ranking is for 1,300 schools out of a total of 1,673 educational institutions in 93 countries and territories. Of these, 145 schools are participating in the ranking for the first time.

QS WUR ranks universities according to six criteria, including academic reputation (40%), employer reputation, citations/faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

QS's ranking criteria emphasize the contribution and impact of the university's training and research quality on society (through assessments by domestic and foreign businesses and scholars) and contributions to scientific research activities (through the number of citations/lecturers).

Similarly, Phenikaa University is also highly appreciated by Times Higher Education (THE) Magazine. In early June 2023, Times Higher Education Magazine announced the ranking results of THE Impact Rankings. This is a ranking that takes the pioneering implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations as a criterion to rank higher education institutions globally.

Phenikaa University ranked 801-1000 in the world along with 8 other higher education institutions in Vietnam. Accordingly, Phenikaa University is in the top 25% of universities with the most influence in global partnerships for sustainable development goals according to THE's assessment.

In particular, SDG 17 - Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Goals, the top important criterion, Phenikaa is in the top 401 - 600 out of 1625 schools ranked in this index, up more than 600 places compared to 2022.

Besides Ton Duc Thang University and Phenikaa University, Duy Tan University is also ranked high in the university rankings.

Specifically, in 2021, Duy Tan University is among the top universities in Vietnam on the Center of World University Rankings (CWUR).

CWUR (The Center of World University Rankings) ranks 2,000 out of nearly 25,000 universities worldwide, and is considered the unit that ranks the largest number of universities in the world.

The CWUR Ranking system is calculated according to the following criteria: Quality of education (25%): based on the number of alumni who have won top international medals and awards, relative to the number of students of the school;

Alumni employment (25%): based on the number of alumni holding CEO positions in the world's leading companies and corporations, relative to the number of students of the school;

Quality of faculty (10%): based on the number of scholars and researchers of the school who have won the world's top medals, badges, and awards;

Research Efficiency (40%): Research Volume (10%): based on the total number of scientific research articles (international); Publication Quality (10%): based on the number of articles published in the world's leading journals; Research Impact (10%): based on the number of articles published in influential journals; Citation Count (10%): based on the number of the most cited articles.

Admissions results are not as expected.

Although highly ranked in the world rankings, these schools have lower entrance scores than many regional universities. Specifically, in 2023, Duy Tan University will enroll nationwide candidates who have graduated from high school or equivalent in the country or abroad and are eligible for university admission according to the admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training with 6,200 targets.

Duy Tan University's 2023 admission scores based on high school graduation exam scores were announced on August 23:

Compared to Duy Tan University, Phenikaa University is more promising when the benchmark scores of the majors are over 20 points. Specifically, the benchmark scores:

In recent years, Phenikaa University has made efforts to improve the quality of admissions (photo source: internet).

However, recently, Phenikaa University announced additional admissions for training majors/programs based on the results of the 2023 high school graduation exam with a total of 790 targets:

Also having difficulty attracting candidates. This year, after the Ministry of Education and Training announced the results of the virtual screening, Ton Duc Thang University also quickly announced its additional enrollment plan.

Many majors of this school are not meeting their quotas, such as environmental science, environmental engineering technology, labor protection, traffic construction engineering, sports management (golf major), and construction management.

The English-taught undergraduate program considers additional majors including: Vietnamese Studies (specializing in tourism and tourism management), Accounting (specializing in international accounting), Biotechnology, Control and Automation Engineering, and Construction Engineering.

The curriculum at Khanh Hoa Branch recruits additional majors: Vietnamese studies (specializing in tourism and travel), accounting, law, software engineering, business administration (specializing in restaurant and hotel management), marketing, and English language.

Through the practice of enrollment, it shows that although the rankings of many schools are high, the trust of parents and students in these schools is not great. The effort to improve the ranking is a noteworthy point, but the training practice is the decisive factor in enrollment.
