On May 15, information from the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital said that the unit had just successfully removed a foreign object, a toothpick nearly 7 cm long, that had created an ulcer in the stomach, of a 69-year-old man residing in Hoang Que Ward (Dong Trieu Town, Quang Ninh) using an endoscopy method.

The patient said that while holding a toothpick in his mouth after a meal, he fell asleep and did not know when he had swallowed it.

After about 2 days, the patient felt a stomachache so he went to the hospital for a check-up.

Doctors performed an endoscopy and removed a sharp toothpick nearly 7 cm long, one end of which was stuck in the stomach wall and had created an ulcer in the patient's stomach.

According to Dr. Do Quang Ut, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, using toothpicks to pick teeth or holding toothpicks after meals, even while sleeping, is a habit of many people. This seems to be a normal habit but is especially dangerous. Especially when sleeping, just coughing or breathing hard can cause the toothpick to fall into the throat and become a foreign object in the airway. Or if accidentally swallowed, it can cause intestinal or stomach perforation. At that time, intervention and treatment will be very complicated and affect the patient's health.

According to Dr. Ut, flossing should be limited and can be replaced with dental floss to ensure oral safety and limit unfortunate incidents.
