Russia attempts to disable US satellite guiding missiles to attack Crimea

Missile strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Russian targets on the Crimean peninsula have become more frequent.
The missile attacks carried out by Ukraine, as alleged by Russia, were closely coordinated with the US space reconnaissance network to increase accuracy. According to Reporter.
Faced with the above situation, at the end of June 2024, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov instructed the General Staff of the Russian Army to take urgent measures to neutralize US reconnaissance tools in the sky over the Black Sea. According to Reporter.
The US military's space reconnaissance network has long been a major problem for Russia, but an even bigger threat comes from commercial satellites used by the US and its NATO allies to gather intelligence, according to the Reporter.
A significant portion of the satellites operating over the Crimean peninsula and the Black Sea region are commercial, but they can still be used to collect data before carrying out combat missions, such as missile strikes, according to Reporter.
One of the Pentagon's key partners in conducting aerial reconnaissance is civilian satellites owned by Maxar and Planet Labs, according to the Reporter.
The two companies are not affiliated with or controlled by the Pentagon, but they have received contracts to collect important data on Russian military facilities in Crimea and neighboring territories, according to Reporter.
More worryingly, the aforementioned civilian satellites are still capable of transmitting this data directly to Washington and even to Kyiv, thereby helping the Ukrainian armed forces plan their operations, according to Reporter.
The satellites of both Maxar and Planet Labs are advanced, so they are capable of providing high-quality images and data, often used to carry out military operations with precision, according to Reporter.
In addition, the data can include information about troop movements, the location of military equipment and infrastructure, making the above satellite network very important in building combat plans, according to Reporter.
Not stopping there, it is estimated that there are about 30 - 40 satellites designed for various purposes flying in the sky over Crimea and the Black Sea, from telecommunications to reconnaissance satellites directly related to the Pentagon. According to Reporter.
These satellites provide continuous data, allowing the US and its allies to monitor all Russian military activities and facilities, a fact that poses great challenges for Moscow in maintaining security and concealing its movements, according to Reporter.
In addition to the satellite network, Russia needs to quickly disable the RQ-4 drones operating off the coast of Crimea to limit intelligence gathering and make planning for further missile strikes more difficult, according to Reporter.
But in addition to reconnaissance UAVs and satellites used for photography, the US still has another satellite network used to gather intelligence or guide attacks, which is the "Starlink constellation" of SpaceX. According to Reporter.
To counter the reconnaissance network serving missile attacks, Russia needs to deploy many comprehensive steps, but this is really too difficult for Moscow at the present stage. According to Reporter.
