The collapse of the Russia-Ukraine gas transit deal has put an end to Russia’s long-standing supply dominance of the European gas market. Both sides have spoken out.

According to Reuters, Russian natural gas exports via Soviet-era pipelines running through Ukraine to Europe stopped early on New Year's Day 2025, when the transit contract expired and Russia and Ukraine failed to reach an agreement to extend it.

"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas. This is a historic event. Russia is losing its market and will suffer financial losses. Europe has made a decision to abandon Russian gas," Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.

The five-year gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine expired on January 1, 2025, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"Due to Ukraine's repeated refusal to extend this agreement, Gazprom has been deprived of the technical and legal ability to provide transit gas through the territory of Ukraine since January 1, 2025," Russia's Gazprom energy group posted a statement on the Telegram application.

Gazprom added: "From 8:00 a.m. this morning Moscow time, Russian gas supplies for transportation through Ukrainian territory will not be carried out."

Gazprom pointed out that this is a five-year gas transit agreement with Ukraine's Naftogaz Company on cooperation between Russian and Ukrainian gas transport system operators. The agreement stipulates the transit of 40 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through Ukraine annually.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that there would definitely be no new contracts on the transit of Russian gas, as it was impossible to reach an agreement just days before the new year 2025.

Ukraine's energy ministry said the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine "has been stopped in the interests of national security".

Ukraine now faces losing transit fees of about $800 million a year, while Gazprom stands to lose nearly $5 billion in gas revenue.

Nearly a third of Russia's gas sold to Europe passes through Ukraine. The rest is transported via pipelines under the Black Sea to Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary or by liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers.
