Russia conducts combat drills with nuclear missiles.

The Russian military launched an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile during combat exercises aimed at testing the capabilities of this weapon system.

"A combat crew from the 14th Missile Division launched an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during combat training at the Plesetsk cosmodrome. The training warheads landed in a simulated target area at the Kura training ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula," the Russian Ministry of Defense announced.

The Russian military said the test was aimed at verifying the tactical and technical capabilities of the Yars system, as well as allowing the Strategic Missile Forces to finalize the procedure for redeploying Yars batteries to remote areas before firing. "The entire objective has been accomplished," the Russian Ministry of Defense added.

The RS-24 Yars is one of Russia's main ICBMs, first tested in 2007. The missile has a maximum range of 12,000 km and can carry 10 thermonuclear warheads, each equivalent to 300,000 tons of TNT. The Strategic Missile Forces, one of the five branches of the Russian military, are responsible for operating mobile launchers and ICBM launch silos.

In his State of the Union address on February 29, President Vladimir Putin accused the West of seeking to undermine Russia. He warned that the consequences of intervention in Russia now would be more catastrophic than in previous periods.

"Adversaries should remember that Russia possesses weapons capable of striking targets on their territory. This could lead to a nuclear conflict, risking the destruction of civilization," the Kremlin leader said.
