The Russian military said on Tuesday it had taken control of a strategically important area in the New York logistics hub in eastern Ukraine, part of a campaign to seize the entire Donetsk region from Moscow.
Even as Ukrainian troops push deeper into the Kursk region, the fate of New York is a reminder that Russian forces are still conducting operations in eastern Ukraine.
In addition, the Russian government has also announced the creation of several new military units in Kursk and two other border regions to continue repelling Ukraine's cross-border campaign without having to redistribute forces from deep inside Ukrainian territory.
A new coordination body has begun working around the clock to ensure communication between regional authorities, military command and the Defense Ministry , Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said.
Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Tuesday that his forces had advanced 28-35 kilometers into Russian territory, seizing 1,263 square kilometers of territory including 93 settlements. Russia has vowed to repel the operation.
The operation has boosted Ukrainian military morale, and Kyiv believes that seizing territory and taking Russian prisoners could give the government an advantage in any negotiations that might be held.
However, independent military analysts say it is a big gamble by Kyiv to withdraw some of its most elite units from the front lines in eastern Ukraine, where Russia continues to advance.
Win step by step
The capture of New York, if confirmed by Ukraine, would be another step forward for Russia and open the door to other strategically important victories. In the town with the same name as New York City, Russian forces used every means, including drones, to push Ukrainian forces out of fortified positions.

With a pre-war population of fewer than 10,000, thousands of whom were evacuated, the town is home to a rail line to Sloviansk, a city in Donetsk that Moscow has long wanted to capture.
Taking control of New York would bring Russian forces closer to cutting off a vital artery – the Pokrovsk-Kostiantynivka highway, said Yevgeny Poddubny, a correspondent for Russian state television.
Alexander Kots, a resident war correspondent for Komsomolskaya Pravda, said Russian forces could now attack from the south against the city of Toretsk – a city already under pressure from the east by Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the situation in Porovsk and Toretsk was "difficult".
The General Staff of the Ukrainian army said that there were reports of 14 battles in the Toretsk region and 34 battles in the Porovsk region since the beginning of the day.
There has been no official confirmation from Ukraine that New York has fallen into Russian hands. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed that Russian troops had attacked near New York but asserted that Ukraine had put up “adequate resistance”.
Russia also attacked energy infrastructure in northern Ukraine with an overnight drone and missile attack that led to massive fires in the country's west, raising chlorine levels in the air, Ukrainian officials said.
