According to the news site The Hollywood Reporter , Netflix's first moves officially began when Karla Sofia Gascón arranged an interview with the press and posted an article on Instagram to clarify her scandal without any reference, intervention, or advice from the platform.
In response to the actress's move, many sources close to the matter said that the relationship between the two sides is extremely tense. Gascón did not negotiate but left everything to his manager. Netflix also plans to remove the actress from the Oscar campaign.
It was only a few weeks ago that Gascón was scheduled to travel from her home in Spain to Los Angeles for the crucial second leg of the awards campaign. The schedule included appearances at major entertainment events, including the Critics Choice Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild of America Awards. She was also scheduled to appear at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. But now all of that has been canceled.
Netflix will reportedly no longer cover or pay for the actress's travel to awards and events. She will also be restricted from appearing there. But if Gascón still wants to participate, she will have to pay for everything herself, from plane tickets to accommodations.
Additionally, the For Your Consideration campaign poster released earlier this week highlighted Emilia Pérez 's 13 Oscar nominations but omitted Gascón's Best Actress nomination. It only mentioned nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and individual awards for director (Jacques Audiard), supporting actress (Zoe Saldaña), and original song ( El Mal ).
Gascón's image was also removed from campaign materials, instead focusing more on Saldaña and co-stars Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, although the latter two were not nominated.
The change suggests Netflix is trying to minimize Gascón's contributions so that the controversy surrounding her statements doesn't overshadow the film or the contributions of her other co-stars.
The Oscar race has now entered the post-nominations phase, where campaigning tends to focus more on categories that studios think are more likely to win. Saldaña and the film are now considered the frontrunners for the top awards, while Gascón was always considered the underdog to Demi Moore in Medici even before the scandal broke.
Faced with this incident, some anonymous voters revealed to Variety their different reactions. One person did not bother to vote for this film because of Gascón's behavior, confiding: "I wanted to vote for her because I thought Gascón was really extraordinary. But now how can I?", while another shared: "I don't think the scandal affected the final result. I judge the film on its own merits. I don't judge it by external influences."
