In recent days, the prolonged hot weather has caused electricity consumption in Hanoi to continuously increase. According to statistics from Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI), the average daily consumption in May (as of May 18) was 68,172 million kWh, an increase of approximately 10.7% compared to April (58,336 million kWh).

Peak capacity (Pmax) was set at 10:00 p.m. on May 18, 2023 at 4,546 MW, the highest since the beginning of the year.

According to EVN Hanoi, for households, prolonged hot weather also reduces the efficiency of electrical equipment. This leads to the risk of overload, incidents, circuit breakers, and even the risk of fire and explosion will be higher than normal. Especially at peak times, there is still a risk of local overload causing power outages.

Speaking at the seminar "Using electricity economically and efficiently - Solutions to ensure electricity supply in hot season" on May 20, Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu, Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) emphasized that currently, the world energy market is very complicated, energy prices are pushed to very high levels.

Therefore, solutions for using electricity and using energy economically and efficiently (E&E) play a very important role.

A representative of the Department of Energy Conservation and Sustainable Development said that since the beginning of the 2023 dry season, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued directives and action programs to promote the use of energy efficiency and conservation in localities and for large electricity customers.

Mr. Vu said that in using energy efficiently and effectively, the response from businesses and people is needed.

According to Mr. Vu, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has just submitted a document to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, proposing that the Prime Minister issue a directive to increase electricity saving in the 2023-2025 period with stronger and more drastic implementation measures... to help supply electricity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thang, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, said that the North has a much more complex load chart than other regions, so from the beginning, the problem of investing in power source development was raised.

In fact, the peak capacity of the North has increased rapidly in recent years, so in 2023, the city aims to increase propaganda and mobilization of electricity saving compared to previous years.

Specifically, achieving the goal of saving 1.7-2.2% of total energy consumption in the entire city; striving to have 65% of key energy-using enterprises (according to the list published annually) commit to solutions on electricity saving and voluntary electricity load adjustment; 75% of enterprises in industrial parks and industrial clusters gradually switching to electricity-saving technology.

However, the leader of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade said that changing the habits of people and businesses cannot be done in “one or two days”. Therefore, the education sector needs to introduce the subject of “energy saving” right from grade 1, to create long-term awareness in each citizen.

As for businesses, Mr. Thang said that we are a developing country, most of the machines invested in before are old, outdated, and consume a lot of electricity, so for them to change is a complicated and costly process. Therefore, the State needs to have a mechanism to accompany businesses to support them in the conversion.
